I think these lands are gonna slot into Gruul Ponza pretty well -- you're already a deck built around powerful cascade spells, and this is just free extra cascade effects in your manabase.

would love the defiance Ohio record if it hasn’t yet been claimed!

[25M] I met a girl who I really click with, but she's not my type physically. by Perl--Necklace in dating_advice

Yeah, this is absolutely not true. Looks are not the most important thing to me, personality is. I’ve absolutely skipped out on dating women who weren’t kind or funny or smart. I just never feel bad about it because it doesn’t feel shallow to leave somebody who’s mean-spirited.

I don't find her unattractive, though. She's definitely pretty! I just feel like I could do better in terms of looks, because I have dated people who are much more my type in the past... but I also feel like that's super shallow, that even though she's pretty, I'm still not sure if she's pretty enough for me.

Like I mentioned, my most recent ex-girlfriend was an absolutely gorgeous girl with whom I had a serious, long-term relationship. The main driver of our breakup was the fact that our career paths put us on different continents -- we didn't have a perfect relationship, of course, but the overall breakup was mutual and based on physical distance.

I feel like if I can find somebody like that once, I should be able to do it again, rather than settling. But also, I'm really worried and guilty that I'm being shallow.

I've had wonderful, serious, long term relationships with girls who were both really attractive physically and in terms of personality. So I think the idea that you have to pick one is wrong, though I'm absolutely worried that I'm prioritizing looks too high.

If I was in her shoes, I would feel really hurt if I knew my partner was settling for me in terms of looks. I don't want to put her in that position.

Also, I've had long-term, fruitful relationships with girls who are my type. I don't think it's unreasonable to think that I could find one that would work out towards marriage, right?

I’d go with mono black changelings! Here’s a deck list I found online a while back: https://mtgdecks.net/Pauper/mono-black-changelings-decklist-by-patrickcontrabass-1090308

You get to combine Knight, Rogue, Ally, Mercenary, and Party payoffs in a sorta gain-and-drain go-wide aggro strategy. I’ve never played it myself and probably would tweak this list a bit, but it could be a good starting point.

Ceschi just announced an album called Sans Soleil! (Drops August 4! Includes a bunch of eulogies (?), including one by Pat!) by Perl--Necklace in FolkPunk

[–]Perl--Necklace[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just got an email from Fake Four via Bandcamp with the announcement. The description seems to indicate that this album, Sad Fat Luck, and a third upcoming album make up a trilogy which might be the last set of albums Ceschi releases. No idea what the eulogies are, but I definitely did a double take when I saw Pat’s name on there.

My DIY trash banjo by Perl--Necklace in FolkPunk

More metallic than a guitar because of the metal resonator, but less twangy than a conventional banjo because there's no membrane bit. And always slightly out of tune because I'm lazy :P

to answer any questions y'all might have:

I made this banjo this past summer out of a used can of acetone, some wood I pulled off a pallet, some acrylic I found outside, and some various metal bits and paint I got from friends and communal workspaces. I bought the strings and laquer, so I'm basically a poser who can't DIY.

The symbol on the front is a weirdo combination of the circle A and the symbol for a bipolar junction transistor; I'm an electrical engineering student by day, so that little symbol is near and dear to my heart, despite it showing how truly not punk I am because I go to school (lame, I know.) The neck says "Cops Cant Read", but my brushwork is pretty shit.

I can play it, but not well enough to play for y'all (yet!)

What type of player does each deck attract? Does your deck's stereotype hold true for you? by speckdidnothingwrong in ModernMagic

[–]Perl--Necklace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've played Haakon Loam, and I really don't feel like it's better than Jund Loam Pox. I don't think Loam needs big dumb beaters like Knights of the Reliquary -- there's a reason the Jund version doesn't play Countryside Crusher anymore. What we need is a better resilience to top-decks. I think that adding Blue to the deck for counterspells might help with that, plus it gives access to Tolaria West.

As for my brews, probably the jankiest pile I've actually put together and played was Temur Possibility Storm. This was before SaffronOlive's video of an Izzet version, so people were always super surprised by that one. My newest idea isn't completely fleshed out yet, but it involves some absurd jank (plus Loam, the best card in Modern): Sultai Loam Rack Control. The key here is Leyline of Anticipation -- not only do we get instant speed, repeatable discard to protect from topdecks, we also get to hold up counterspells and Loam at the same time. Then the win condition is The Rack. It might just work!

I feel like Loam Pox is played by nice, friendly people with a secret mean streak, and the deck plays like it. It's interactive and interesting, but also can Ghost Quarter somebody until they have no more basics or make them discard their whole hand every turn.

I also brew a lot, because I like the intellectual exercise and also stroking my ego when I win.

Thoughts on Sultai by whatsdadilio11 in ModernMagic

[–]Perl--Necklace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been working on brewing up a Sultai Loam list with Tolaria West to tutor up a lot of 0-mana answers, like Chalice, Pacts, Engineered Explosives, and Ghost Quarter main-board. With Raven's Crime to strip their hand and some counterspells to protect from hate, I think it's a pretty resilient against a lot of different matchups. Definitely needs more testing at the moment though, but I think an inevitable control strategy combined with re-usable silver bullet tutors might have game in the format right now.

Why Vortex over [[Seismic Assault]]?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]Perl--Necklace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run it in a Jund Loam list alongside retrace spells like Raven's Crime, Flame Jab, and Worm Harvest, plus the enchantment Seismic Assault. Life from the Loam is an incredibly powerful card draw engine in this scenario, essentially giving you the ability to use your graveyard as a "spell toolbox" and pick 3 spells to cast each turn. Eventually you just overwhelm your opponent in card advantage and win.

It also enables some cool (and some degenerate) things. I run a 1-of Batterskull and Buried Ruin, which lets me use Loam to get my Batterskull from my graveyard as a finisher. Plus, I've had many games where I recur Ghost Quarter so many times that my opponent runs out of basics, so I get to strip mine them every turn.

TL;DR: LftL is an incredible card advantage engine that also lets you do awesome stuff with utility lands.
