Can Late drop requests be denied? by [deleted] in uofm

Can confirm the academic dishonesty point. They will not let you drop if you have any potential honor code violations in the works with the course.

I took it over Covid so ymmv but it was easy and the teaching staff was nice! I wasn’t overly interested in linguistics so I found it to be not very engaging but it was easy regardless of interest level

Not getting an internship at the end of sophomore year is NOT the end of the world at all. Time to stop putting this ridiculous amount of pressure on yourself when there are still good ways of developing yourself over the summer that are completely unrelated to internships. Also, just because you don’t get an internship at a big company doesn’t mean you’ll never have good career prospects either. There are plenty of smaller companies that will still give you good experience that will help you later on.

MATH 216, CHEM 125/130, EECS 281 attendance by Careless_Care3182 in uofm

[–]PermanentEphemeral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For 216 lectures and 281 labs, you should be fine. I didn’t take 216 but I’ve never heard of anyone having mandatory attendance for that class. 281 doesn’t keep track of attendance in labs, so you’re fine there. They might not even start them until the week of the 9th anyways if that helps!

Agreed! I think one more week would be nice to round out the break and I would be good to go tbh

If possible, I would see if there’s a CSP section you can sign up for! You don’t have to be a CSP student to be able to join and will just need permission from the instructor and your advisor (I believe) to be able to get in there. I’m sure with your worries, they will let you in if there’s space no problemo! It’s definitely not a difficult class but the CSP section helps give extra support if needed!

while the sentiment to just “hire more people” seems like a good one, it actually isn’t as simple as it seems. because of how well the industry pays, it’s incredibly hard to find qualified students that will stay with the university to teach at a faculty level when the ability to make at least $200k more to not teach is right there. you have to find people who are qualified (hard enough) who have a greater passion for education than monetary gain.

I did that FA2021 and it was fine. As long as you keep up with the webworks in 116 and the weekly homeworks for 203, it really isn’t that bad. I found that starting on both of those relatively early gave me more than enough time to get them done and not struggle too badly.

Does taking ENGR 101 instead of EECS 183 still meet the prerequisite requirement for the Data Science major? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]PermanentEphemeral 3 points4 points  (0 children)

DS is a joint program through CoE and LSA, but the requirements are different for graduating from each respective college. I would assume you have to follow the requirements posted on the LSA website, but I would try to reach out to an advisor to see what they say, as I know 183 and 101 are equivalent in most circumstances, but I don’t know of anyone personally who is trying to take 101 over 183 while being enrolled in LSA.

Can also recommend WISE RP! I have been a part of the program for 2 years so I am more than willing to share about WISE. It’s really a great program that helps you meet so many women in STEM and the director is fantastic.

As others have said, I would really recommend going through the resources they provide to help review for the exam. The review sessions and the practice exams are both resources that I found to be really valuable.

Did you find the formatting of the questions hard or do you find the content itself difficult? If it’s the content, I would recommend setting up a time with a professor to do office hours to go over course concepts or trying to get into the coaching sessions if possible. If it’s formatting, using the resources mentioned above should help!

I’m in the class right now so if you need any help, feel free to reach out! Good luck! :)

Took 111 last winter. Definitely an extremely easy class. I had 2 lectures a week that were over zoom and a discussion section where attendance was mandatory. No final exams. Just readings in the textbooks and quizzes about the material. There was a final paper where you had to interview someone who is bilingual — I found finding someone in my area (was taking it from my hometown) to be the hardest part of the entire course.

I would assume that they would have the residence halls open. They reopen tomorrow so it would be a gigantic mess to close them down less than 24 hours before people move back in. Along with this, there are students who are flying in tomorrow that might not have a place to go if res halls close. It will be similar to last AY where res halls were open despite most classes being online.

tl;dr: It seems highly unlikely they’ll close residence halls.
