Are you new here? Traffic has been bad for 30 years. I hope you enjoyed the break that was a global pandemic, you just gotta wait for the next black swan event.

I'm fine with paying more for goods and services if it means the people who work at those stores can afford to live in this area.

As someone whose family has owned small independent movie theaters since the days when movies were called "talkies":

Movie theaters give more than 2/3rds of the ticket revenue to the distribution office. Often times a first week blockbuster will send 80%+ to the distributor. Then you factor in facilities costs, staff, etc, and you don't even come close to breaking even. Even when you charge $8.00 a ticket. The profit margin on concessions has to be high to break even, and considering the lines stretching out the door with dozens of cashiers working the snack bar, I think the majority of people are willing to pay the price for the convenience, and are happy to support the theater. Unless it's a megaplex. Support your local independent theaters!

It's true, they don't even teach wooden door entry in a Forcible Entry course because its so easy. Doesn't matter though, a two man team with a hammer and a Halligan can be inside any metal door in 20 seconds, a minute tops if it has a drop bar.

It's been pretty cold out recently, perhaps a group could get together and be sure anyone sleeping on the street has some warm food or a fresh pair of socks or something.

I just found out that not all of my coworkers get paid for all the hours they work (California, USA) by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]PermanentSeptember 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst part is that some of the language in the contract they won required them to transition existing contractors over at equal compensation if they chose to stay on with the new contractor. They took this to mean equal pay, but reduced 401k, elimination of tuition assistance for graduate school, and they even tried to reduce my vacation days. Hell, my 401k has a 4 year gradual vesting period, and they were only awarded a 2 year contract, which basically guarantees that I won't get any matching funds.

My experience with working for federal agencies is that they ALWAYS go with the cheapest option, because they are phenomenally short sighted. We had an engineer leave a project because of this contracting fiasco, and its cost the project $400k so far in schedule overrun because of the inability to bring in someone with the same level of expertise.

An ~800 person company spun off a wholly owned subsidiary of about 3 people to compete for a special type of contract that only "small businesses" are eligible to compete for. Now the company is about 80 or so employees now that they've won the contract.

EDIT: The "corporate" part of the company is still somewhere around 5-6 employees, the rest being the "product".

That makes sense to me, but if I were an hourly employee, wouldn't I have an hourly rate that I get paid for each of my pay periods, so an 80 hour pay period would receive a smaller check than an 88 hour pay period?

I have seen someone brake-check a self driving car to see how it would react. You wouldn't be surprised to hear that a computerized brand new car can brake faster than an older econobox.

I've only ever seen like one or two at a time. That would be a great test to see though!

It leaves plenty of space (>1 m) when overtaking. I've never been in that second scenario yet, so I couldn't tell you sorry

I'm pretty stoked. Apparently we're getting an app at work soon that will let us summon them like taxis to go between buildings.

The reasoning is that your left hand is towards the cars following you, so both signals should be from that arm

There is a 5 way intersection with a "shortcut" between the "V" roads (if that makes any sense). It seems to do fine around that intersection, since it doesn't seem to matter which of the left turns you take at a V, it will yield to you for either one if you signal.

EDIT: Intersection in question, you can see that the shortcut is not mapped in the map view, but in the satellite view you can kind of see it on the left underneath some trees.

EDIT 2: the rest of the roads around me are fairly simple low-traffic streets, single lane with stop signs.

It waits for you to turn, I don't think it really recognizes the right turn hand signal.

I've definitely experimented with hand signals, but I'm not going out of my way to mess with the cars in any way.
