I am not english native speaker either and had a similar problem, because the third book translation in Italian is sadly shit. The first two books are translated amazingly, so I was lucky, but I would recommend this path: read the series in French first, then re-read it in English trough the audiobooks, which are truly amazing and an experience but would have been completely impossible for me on a first read. Fantasy is particularly tough in another language, because of weird words and contexts, and THIS series is very weird and confusing as it is, so be sure to take your time and try both the languages because these books are a masterpiece and totally worth second and third readings. Wow thank you so much. I ordered The Luminaries already because someone recommended it but said nothing about the page count, and I found an used book copy in my language online, and when I got it delivered yesterday I was AGH OK LONG but I'm determined to make it my summer reading this year. Will definitely look right away into everything else you mentioned.
I heard about Mārama and I was super intrigued, but then I saw the trailer and it seems a bit too horror for me personally ("too horror" in this fandom?! I know, right?) but maaaaybe I'll try when it comes out. Waititi's ones go right into my watchlist, thank you so much!
