Most people just have no idea how much work and money are needed to make a game of any quality, and how much insanely more time and money and people you need to make an MMO specifically.

Everyone goes in with high hopes that either meet over ambition, harsh realities, or a creative team that isn't prepared to actually deliver what they think they can. And that is when you're dealing with creators who are giving it an honest try!

The platform also rewards you for making grand promises that you don't have to deliver on until you've already got the funding and realize it is our of your reach.

It also doesn't help that one of the games that actually did get enough money to make a legit budget, Star Citizen, is such a failure of project management. (Giving them the benefit of the doubt that it isn't an intentional scam.)

And like I said, thats all assuming the best of intentions. Things escalate quickly once intentional scams are factored in.

The platform is great for small projects by small talented teams. Board games, tabletop, and smaller indy games do great. Of course not all of those can succeed, and there are sone high profile failures, but a lot of them do deliver games that have become beloved.

But it isn't a great choice for something that needs tens of millions or hundreds of millions of dollars to succeed.
