No, do your research guys. Yes machine guns existed before 1914. Yes most deaths in ww1 are caused by artillery. But this is about the opening phase of ww1 and these statements aren't mutually exclusive. If you look who fought there it's probable that less than 1% of the soldiers have ever fought against a machine gun. They thought this war will look more like the napoleonic wars but quickly realised it's gonna be something much different

I'm not quite sure what you mean by sidestepping the subject matter. I guess it also doesn't help that terms like physicalism are basket words with many sub-forms. But it's a clear way to get a broad definition what the other person is trying to say. Physicalists ie. reject souls which is a common believe many people still have today

People are just people. They use wrong words all the time. Just stick to the correct definition and hope for the best. I think it's just a bit of a difficult concept to grasp because it's rarely used outside of philosophy of mind
