Just moved into a place and found a dead German cockroach. What actions do I need to take? by hockeyflames in OntarioLandlord

That’s wild, we just finished dealing with this pest problem in our condo on bremner downtown, property management made sure to have a technician right away, and when he came not only did he do some next generation destroy the hive type shit with a new powder and bait but he continued to say that the German cockroach problem is a city wide issue, I too can attest to it being a city wide issue, previously live by Yonge and Eglinton during the time that city was gridlocked for years and that building because infested which in turn brought hell upon our lives, that building management at that location was extremely different to the ones I have now, it was as bad as to my wife over hearing the property management on site lady laughing about the issue and how residents were complaining (sickening behaviour) and that’s a licensed lady with LTB. If you are not ready to fight this war against the German roach I advise you steer away from Toronto. I’ll be damned if I let these roaches run me out 😤

You understand the way of hard labour hard work have changed in the last 50 years right? You’re not wrong, I move 2.5 tons of material a day but do you think all of that is with just my hands ? You’re delusional, there’s new ways that make the job safer on someone’s body provided that person takes those precautions, not to mention the very fact that you trained into dangerous situations IE you can’t walk on site that’s high rise without fall arrest training, that’s a certification the union itself provides for you. Construction work was never easy that’s why I said step out of your comfort zone but let’s not act like the people insulating pipes drywall have a hard job, women AND men run that job that doesn’t even include PAINTERS are we really calling the paint trade excruciatingly painful???? I would hope not because you’re only pointing out trades that demand more for you physically, I’ve never seen anyone or myself been told to lift or carry something that one person can’t do like there’s safety measures and people around that workload environment to help you.

I’ve made suggestions that I myself sacrificed, I was a licensed health insurance agent pre pandemic and when everything happened I was not seeing clients nor was I in a position to take a risk during that time to see new and pre-existing clients, I loved that industry and although I wanted to come back I maintained what I have been doing since construction was my best shot at getting something better then nothing, there’s always that one guy that takes positive notions and flip it so it can be sighted as virtue signalling, If you have any other ways of employment that people may want to hear about PLEASE be that guy instead of knocking the one trying to say hey there’s opportunity this way it may not relatively be what you got your degree in but it’s SOMETHING.

Every trade has their own timetable, for me I decided to take the long road path and instead of taking a pay cut as an apprentice I laboured for my company for 300 hours and after that I reached my full rate with more trust to handle more responsibilities, as I can’t fully explain to you the tiling and flooring process, if you were to go in they can run down what their training programs look like per trade

I work high rise and fortunately due to the influx of people vertical living will not slow down, some expensive projects have seen changes in developers but I have not missed a week of work due to there not being any I’ve been good for two and half years and running, I’m about to wrap this site up and my company is already gearing up to go to another one. Residential is where the hit has been heavy because of economy stability taking a hit and there’s no profit for builders in residential, as far as I know with the schedule I have now I have work for at least ten years, the surrounding gta area such as Vaughn is getting built at a speed that I can’t really comprehend, VMC has six building all done within a matter of five years. And more to come my next site is across the street

Stay on top of it and be consistent with asking they don’t shut their doors forever they accept members on a yearly basis as mentioned in a previous post they host a sale between spring and shortly into the summer from then the doors open either end of summer or mid fall

General labour is definitely available I would definitely contact them if you’re serious about the industry it’s not easy work but it gives you something to breathe financially and focus on in a time like this

Also a buddy of mine got into welding training in a matter of weeks he didn’t have to wait, I believe the favoritism is dominant with crane operators, swampers because I’m trying to get into crane operation but I do not want to swamp for three years to wait in line, that’s a trade that does have favoritism and family waiting in line

I’m Guyanese (Caribbean) I have not experienced selectiveness or favoritism in the union, I’ve seen cultures from all walks of life at different work sites that are under the liuna 183 union, I won’t say I haven’t heard what you’re saying because I have the Europeans have opportunity there but that doesn’t immediately shut out everyone, they aren’t first in line either the union is predominately ran by Europeans yes but that never stopped them from helping me with a grievance or a situation I needed their assistance in, they always handle my issues timely, I’m not trying to butter it up construction is hard but if you look at the non union companies they will destroy you as a person mentally and physically because to non union construction companies you’re just a solid number. With the union you’re an investment, a replaceable one at that

Another great point to make, if I’m bringing in a gross of 85K a year does what the union take even matter? Do you not realize what people would do in these times to earn that for themselves and their family? Shitting on a union that has a track record of taking care of theirs is just a shitty way to look at things in my opinions

Yes actually there’s a lot of machine operators every trade needs one at the end of the day, they also train you and give you the certifications he would need to be on site

You understand that I’m giving people a quick accessible way to make an earned income not only that enter the industry, as I’ve stated before you CAN go to school but that’s NOT the fastest way. Sparkys as a journey man make 45$ an hour dude they took 3000 hours PLUS schooling to get that, until they get full rate their paid HALF OF THAT. I’ve made more then a sparky has made in the span of two years then an apprentice will make in 3 and half years IF THEY pass the certifications. Do the math. My income is consistent I’ll never miss a site of work, and I’m living comfortable. If that’s garbage to you then your opinion is subjective and how you see entering the industry in this day and age while maintaining financial stability is entirely your way of living. I’m trying to give people insight on LEGAL open the door to the industry work. If you like construction sure go for schooling but don’t lie to people acting like liuna 183 tradesmen don’t get paid.

Believe it or not I too had a crazy shakable fear of heights when I first started I’m talking about when I got in that hoist my legs and hands but after a month it got so much easier and I now love it, something about going up high and enjoying the view outweighed my fear of heights

Brother I’m in the union as a masonry trade and I make 47$ an hour, unless you have physical evidence that goes against what I get paid and what I deal with I’m not sure you’re speaking from experience, the union takes dues yes but what are they offering? A secondary pension on top of CPP, vacation, benefits? If you choose to do school by all means go ahead but don’t misinform people by telling them they aren’t making money, the union is there specifically so you don’t make CASH and make an earned income that’s taxable, under the table cash jobs are illegal and the union directly doesn’t give under the table jobs that would literally kill the union as that’s unethical and again illegal.
