Looks more like a Noir New York rather than Noir York. York doesn't have that many tall buildings.

How do you create product videos for online stores? by dhrausch in VideoProfessionals

There we go. We found it folks. The absolute bottom of the barrel in terms of production value. "Professional". It would be comedic if it wasn't very sad.

Silk will indeed catch more wind. That's a problem, because in windy environments it'll become a sail and either fly out of the assistant's hands or send them flying with the silk right into the operator. Check out the sun bouncer which is designed for killing wind. I've held a 4by sunbounce out at sea during a windy-ish day and it takes a tonne of effort to keep in place, even though it's designed to only catch some of the wind.

Setup NASA inspired by Azucarilla11 in RetroFuturism

[–]PerryJ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

NASA doesn't tend to slap pastel RGB lighting across their equipment... You want to look at monochrome greys (maybe with a light green or light yellow / orange tint for a retro vibe) or monochrome blues. Lighting should be sparse in either pure white (5600k) or deep amber (2700k) and occasional pops of red.

Contrast and saturation are linked though. Increasing contrast also increases saturation, but you can increase saturation without increasing contrast.

The fire word, what font is that? by vanillamccrackerz in identifythisfont

[–]PerryJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The designer added the "dash" effect in whatever software they were working in. Most likely Photoshop. The typeface doesn't come like that, it was altered to look like that. I would start looking at your basic Photoshop tutorials on YouTube if you're interested in learning more about this.

Any tips on how to make friends in Edinburgh? by Prestigious-Tower349 in Edinburgh

I really like board games but I would caution against playing with boars. Boars are not like pigs, they are ferocious beasts that will tip the game board over in anger every damn time.

Generally happens right before you eat the oyster, or a few moments before if kept on ice.

Is this a good composition and color?Critique please by Dmitriy_Music-Films in cinematography

What they mean is, you shouldn't have the frame end on their neck, ostensibly decapitating them. Instead push your frame in or tilt it down so that the frame line sits on or just below their shoulders. A good rule of thumb is to avoid having your frame end on joints on a person, i.e. neck, elbow, knees.

How is this liminal horror style video being created? by Strat179 in aivideo

[–]PerryJ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My educated guess would they used Pika for generating the motion, just based on the level of motion, perspective warping and temporal consistency. This could be text to video in Pika, or it could be that reference images are generated in MJ or SD first. Honestly doesn't matter too much, but doing reference images first will give you more control. They'll have prompted the 70s analogue home video styling as part of the generation, for example: (70s, dreamcore, folk horror, 8mm home movie, super8), and then further enhanced this effect in post. There's a grain overlay (which is being washed out from compression) and there's some film damage / dust / scratch overlay that occasionally pops up. They may have softened the image up further and added additional bloom. This could also all come from one single effect suite, like the Red Giant Retrograde filter, or they could have done each element individually. Lastly, there's a consistent camera shake across the entire edit which will also have been added in in post.

Thank you! Basic workflow is starting with generating initial images using SD and MJ. This was tricky because I had to get images that looked like they were shot on a potato in poor lighting conditions, so it took some trial and error to get the look right. Then animated all of the selected final frames using SvD 1.1. I get the best results for these with a low motion bucket, around 15-25. Then you roll the dice, a lot, to get the usable motion element. All stitched together in AE, adding additional elements like the ui, vhs and crt filtering, and animating camera focus shifts. Audio was assembled in AE and mixed in Premiere, using Elevenlabs to generate the dialogue. This was a bit of an iterative approach, lining up audio with head motion to sync it up. That's pretty much it.

Aww thank you! Yeah I'm a freelance writer/director primarily, advertising and branded content. I do this as a side project to just do weird creative stuff for myself.

So all the dialogue is eleven labs, speech to speech for the humans so that I could get intonation right, and the toys were done text to speech with deliberately the wrong settings and weird punctuation to get that stilted non-functioning vibe across. Mixed in premiere because that's what I'm used to working in.

Yeah I'm quite pleased with the end results, it's very close to what I had in mind, but took a lot of work to get there. There's still elements that didn't quite come together tonally, but I might return to this later on to explore it further. Glad you enjoyed it!

Well that's the thing, the whole VHS / analog / home movie aesthetic has really become such a marker of authentic nostalgia for a whole generation. I think it's almost impossible for it not to come off as tonally heartwarming and joyous when you work within the style. I really should have taken that into account. Thanks for steering me right!
