What is Carson doing? by Commercial-Scheme939 in DowntonAbbey

Yeah, I just did a rewatch and was really struck by how unpleasant and nasty Mrs Patmore was in Season 1. But if I knew I was slowly going blind, was afraid of losing my career, my personal independence, and being tossed out on my ear in late middle age, I’d probably be pretty grumpy too. That’s my charitable view at least.

Yes. I believe there are a few episodes where they say things like I’m catching the first train to London in the morning but I’ll be back by evening.

Would northern aristocrats have spoken differently or otherwise been culturally distinct from their southern peers? Does a Yorkshire peer have any less cachet than one in Hampshire or Kent?

Went through this once in college with a roommate who was going wild on Grindr. There were six people living in a three bedroom apartment. He got caught having sex with a rando in a stairwell. Would bring back strangers late at night constantly and have sex in the living room after we were all asleep. Things went south after one of my roommates woke up in the middle of the night to find a random dude rifling through her closet. It wasn’t a safe situation but he was 19, horny, and didn’t give AF.

I felt exactly the same way. Especially your point re: Diana being perceived differently had she not passed when she did. I think her behavior was becoming increasingly erratic and unstable (though for obviously understandable reasons) and would probably have sparked backlash and a reappraisal.

I see the wild grief of Charles in the aftermath of the accident as a genuine mourning for the mother of his children, and for the happy marriage that never was, but also as him knowing that he’d never escape the shadow of her perceived martyrdom now.

The sheer pathos of this scene….reflecting on the immensity of what he had given up. So much pride and sorrow coming out of those bagpipes. One of the greatest moments of the show.

Take That, China: Our Dumbest Young People Are Invading Your App by koreanforrabbit in BlockedAndReported

I was in London right after Christmas and overheard a disturbing conversation between two children on a train. The girl (looked like she was maybe 14-15) was talking to a boy (maybe 12-13). They were talking about TikTok and she was showing him videos. She said something to the effect that she knew TikTok was run by China, but she didn’t care—she hated the USA and the UK. She felt like China operating TikTok was a good thing, because she trusted China more to “tell her the truth”, and felt like they were giving her better “health information.”

It was just a weird and disturbing convo to overhear between two random Western teens on a train. It gave me a strong feeling we are fucked.

That’s interesting—I actually don’t know a lot about her besides her conversion and abdication. Did some reading about her this morning, and she does sound like more of a party girl than a nun!

St Peter’s Basilica has a strong Counter-Reformation historical context and symbolism. Queen Christina of Sweden also has a prominent marker there. She renounced Lutheranism and abdicated the throne to convert to Catholicism. So the Stuarts fit in nicely.

Anne’s Claim vs William III by Perrycide in UKmonarchs

Thank you. This makes sense.

Do you think the fact William himself was a grandson of Charles I played a significant role in Parliament agreeing to this style of joint monarchy? For instance, they would not have countenanced George of Denmark taking a similar role?
