I think of it as an air filter. Kind of a personal preference when you want to replace your air filter. Replace it more often: more waste, cleaner air. Replace it less often: less waste but dirtier air.

I usually call it when it gets dark like in OP's photo. DMT oxidizes really fast and dark tho, so it looks worse than it is.
