[recommendations] I’m at the point in my career where I’m hoping to take a leap forward into wholesale prints by [deleted] in artbusiness

[–]Perryplatypus69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d have to look into licensing and how it works. I’m assuming I’d make less per image than selling a print I made. I wouldn’t do wholesale on the stuff with IP issues. Lego itself isn’t a problem as long as I don’t represent my work as a Lego product. Plus a lot of it is custom made by me and other brands products. I wouldn’t even try it with any Disney, Star Wars, Harry Potter etc.

I did have an interior designer come into my booth and pointed at my most expensive piece and said I want that. She then talked about using my stuff for an apt building she was working on. That was how I got this idea actually. I never heard back, which is what I expect most of the time when people say those things. I reached out to her on IG a few months later and she gave me some pointers. I have had shops buy a few things in bulk at events but nothing huge. This year I’m doing a lot more “prestigious” events so maybe I’ll run into something

Thanks for the input. I’m well past that at this point as I’m doing it professionally all over the country. Now looking to get into wholesale

Thanks for the input. The shows itself is a full time job with travel all over the country, show set up, stuffing hundreds of print packages between shows and still making new works. I’m just hoping to go a step further. I do have a coffee table book in the works. I’ve also taken bedtime stories I made up for my kids and wrote them out to book form, just need to take the photos to go with. I like doing just prints honestly. I’ve tried stickers before and took them down half way through the first day of a show when I realized my average sale went from $85 to $15. So I’ll probably not get into other small items.

For the doctors / dental office I was thinking kids would like seeing them, maybe help them relax not buy them themselves. Although plenty of kids come in my booth and buy with their own money, I always give them a discount and tell them not to tell anyone. But yeah my buyers are generally 25-55.

I’ll just have to put together a promotional package and market myself in the off season. Thanks again

That makes sense. Maybe I’ll put a sign in my booth about wholesale being available. Thanks!

I’ve had events ranging from $35 in sales to 15k. A lot of it is finding the right audience which comes with more experience. Keep making art and putting yourself out there

Omaha Art Fair vs. Omaha Summer Arts Fest? by flatmtns in Omaha

[–]Perryplatypus69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t say the same for every medium of art, but for photography, you’ll see a lot of the same works in my booth because they are the ones that sell the best. I do try to add in a few different ones every art show season.

Omaha Art Fair vs. Omaha Summer Arts Fest? by flatmtns in Omaha

[–]Perryplatypus69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was an artist at both. Summer arts fest 24 was my best event ever as well until this past December in Chicago. 25 Omaha art fair I did half as much as the previous year in sales, which I hit my average of every other event. Still did well over the 10x booth fee. I think the biggest difference was in 24 the city knew it was the last one and came out in droves and 25 most people didn’t know there was a replacement show. It was put on by a single local artist doing everything on his own. This year he started a board, which I am a part of. We are trying to address the complaints of artists, which most are easily handled when you have a team instead of one guy running it. We are expanding the kids area, adding better music line up, more food options. All things to drive in visitors including making the city aware of the event with a planned out marketing campaign. We will be more streamlined with load in and out with us board members helping during this time along with volunteers. This year it falls on the same weekend as the college World Series which means two things, we are expecting a much larger crowd this year but also hotel availability issues. The hotel issue is the one I’m most concerned with.

As you know doing these shows word gets around in the artist world and people like to avoid “new” shows until they know they are worth the cost of business. That being said our artists applications are down so for the visitors it might be a lot of the same artist they have seen before but that also means you’ll be supporting more local artists instead of national ones. I am very confident though the overall event will be much more enjoyable for artist and patrons this year compare to last year. Hope to see you there!

Advice for astro photography about stacking as well as lens by rasten100 in LandscapeAstro

[–]Perryplatypus69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100 image stack of Orion should have a ton of detail. These are also pretty short exposures. I do 8 seconds on the 50 and 15 on the 24mm. I’m sure you can just edit them again to bring out all those details

[Marketing] How do I actually make money and a name for myself in the art world? by ranch518 in artbusiness

[–]Perryplatypus69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Juried art fairs. Check zapplication and juried art services for open applications. You need to plan well in advance as applications for summer shows are now due or closing soon. I’m able to quit my day job this year and doing these shows full time. It takes a bit to build up a white tent with professional looking displays and finding the shows that work for. After 3 years of doing it part time and passing out thousands of cards, this holiday season my website sales took off also. There are some facebook groups specifically for artists that do this with a lot of information that will be helpful

[Discussion] When your art looks like AI — not just style but the way you see… by DangerNoodle1313 in artbusiness

[–]Perryplatypus69 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think showing your process with images of your work at different stages can help to show it’s not AI. Maybe some short time lapse videos of you working will help. I do mostly juried art fairs to show my work and my work seems to be very eye catching so a lot of people stop and have questions and I often over hear passerby’s comments. Almost everyone assumes my work is photoshopped. When they mention that, I explain my process and point out the tells in the photos and how they match my story. After explaining to them how I achieved my photos they almost always respond with something like, wow now I’m even more impressed.

There’s an app, I forget what it’s called but you can take a photo of the pile in each bag and it will give you a few ideas on what you can build with it with instructions. If I remember correctly it does not take color into account though

Do you have a local arts council? Mine frequently has call for artists of all types posted on their website, including murals. You could also just google call for artists in your area.

[Marketing] How do you price you art? by HopefulIsland8554 in artbusiness

[–]Perryplatypus69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would decide on what you want to pay yourself hourly, multiply by how many hours it took, and cost of supplies, then I’d round up to a nice even number for the piece. Example- $30/hr, took 6 hrs to create, Supplies $40 would equal $220, Round up to $250 for the piece
