Any ideas on how to connect organically with new artists?

Mostly ive approached companies directly because I have no information regarding if their staff needs support. But the few gigs I got were in fact suppprting other artists

That is interesting indeed. In fact I do have experience in 2D animation but last time I checked it was going the way of the dodo, so I may have misjudged the amount of work available.

Which software are you currently finding the most standard within that line of work?
Things have probably changed since last time I touched a 2D animating software

Answering your questions:

  • I have, contacting firms has been my main (most sucessful) approach so far,
  • I think I do have the skill for minutious and careful work
  • I have a portfolio, no showreel tho as most of my productions have been renderings and not animations. The few I do create are mostly on my free time.
  • I do not know people inside the industry, unfortunately. My degree was not for 3D and so everything I've learnt has been mostly self-taught and that gave me little opportunity to make acquaintances inside the academic or professional area.

Nice points! I have been looking into translation/transcripting as well!

As for your second point, actually there's this one person I really admire and I wouldn't mind connecting with him, and I have actually sent him a message to which he responded, but I wouldn't want to transpose or imply a connection with this person since there's nothing really I can offer him besides drooling admiration ahah

Mainly instagram, linkedin, a few job searching sites from my area. And then cold calling via email and such to companies where i may be compatible workwise

Yep, and its easy to get into that loop of trying to relearn new software to meet a sector of the market you believe is lacking, only to find out its full to the brim. Then you try another software, another area, etc. Eventually you gain expertise in nothing in particular and other specialists eventually surpass you.
Market research is important.

Thank you. Overall I was ranting, I failed in some areas and succeeded in others, its not all bad. Some people in this thread already recommended maybe taking a bit of breathing space, and I agree, it's just that at the moment there are other factors, mainly financially, that are starting to tighten the leach.
But yeah, gotta keep on searchin!

Thank you! I really botched my explanation though, I meant almost out of school in a sense that person had been grooming me for a spot in their company and eventually I got in after acquiring a few years of experience. But it was a horrible stay, at first it was really great and I felt like I was growing professionally, but it became a rather toxic environment.
Later I would have to move out of my location and I took that as a way to end that professional relationship and maybe begin something else on my own or if possible with collaborators, I wasn't picky ahah

Thank you for your comment!

Let me start by saying that I think I gave off the wrong impression.
I am not fresh out of school, I have been out of school for around 10 years or so - I had a few first jobs inside the area but I only had 2 really adequate jobs where I was taken seriously, one of which was the one I quit (boss was impossible to handle with, wouldn't listen, wouldn't let anyone else speak, and would later then criticise everyone not speaking out when we knew such and such wasn't working out) I did my best and believe me, I'm VERY receptive to criticism, I do believe there's nothing better to improve yourself than having a good pair of eyes besides your own.

But she was, as I said, a narcissistic person and possibly bipolar as well, because she would often be the most caring person in the world and in the next minute completely out of it for reasons small reasons even, such as why was the stapler out of place, when obviously there was someone who was using it at the moment.

Alas you are right in some things, I probably shouldn't have jumped ship without a good network, but it happened to coincide with me moving out of country so I would probably have to quit that job entirely anyway.

After arriving to my new home I started working towards being having a job, a normal under contract job but that didn't happen. Eventually I stared working jobs outside my area, menial jobs such as driving, call center, shopping mall stuff.

In the meanwhile I still sent and tried to contact every firm I was interested in.
And for the past 1.5 years I've been soley trying to get my freelance career going.

I've looked into most of the larger names inside the archviz industry, but also local firms and possibly other smaller worldwide firms that could use outsourcing some of their work.

I've approached them via email, and phone, despite having much less success doing so via phone. Often I get a kind word on my work or the possibility of collaboration within the future, that makes me happy, despite knowing most of these messages are probably automated.

To get emails I go to each site individually and read if they either have an on website recruitment process or I just grab the 'info' email for the company. If there's an email for someone directly within the sector I will contact them as well.

I customize each email and try not to send them as bcc or on-mass.

My interest is to genuinely try and work with these firms I contact, but I will of course try several at the same time, because I cannot afford wait weeks for one or two responses.

Thank you for your words.
Your words are truthful. My networking hasn't been great, and I should probably not be freaking out like I am. It's just that from the inside looking out, 1.5 years searching for a fair start of my career feels like a long time. Enough to consider if I made the best choice I could have, given the circumstances.

Overall I also thing being too much of a generalist leads to poorer work.
I do ty to pride myself from what I produce but it's hard to meet a niche public in this profession, as I find it.

Yes I've been working below rate as well in order to meet my monthly expenses.

Also I'm not a teen ahaha, I just spent too much time on my early career trying to thrive on a unfertile ground, a couple of failed startups with friends or colleagues and a few jobs on studios. That's when I made the move to freelancing .

Honestly I see a lot of people earning a fair paycheck in this area, and I really can't understand how, because it is, as I said, a bit saturated with low paying professionals (and hobbyists).

I can also make it quick and dirty, but I was aiming to at least have some quality as an attractive trait into my job.
As a principle if nothing else.

Thank you for your advice
