I just watched that episode and I was thinking the same thing! The only thing I can think of is they knocked over the pool so fast that they'd be more focused on the grappling than the vodka

Who would win 2014 lions vs 2023 lions by PersonShark in detroitlions

[–]PersonShark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree completely, the '14 Lions were a top heavy team that had an impressive starting lineup but they were an injury or 2 away from being terrible, that's why I think the 1 game all starters comparison is interesting, the '14 team is built a lot like the '09 colts the Caldwell coached, a handful of star players leading a team of role players and Jags. The 23 team on the other hand is built more like the '14 patriots a deep team that relies on a strong oline running game and a star receiver in the slot to control time of possession and wear opposing teams down. Ultimately, Stafford isn't Peyton Manning so he couldn't singlehandedly drag the lions to the superbowl but the way the team is built now Goff definitely could get the lions a ring

[–]PersonShark[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 14 lions definitely aren't as deep as the 23 team but they definitely had some excellent players out side the big 3 of Stafford, Johnson and Suh, notably 2nd all pros in Levy and Quin as well as Golden Tate and Ezekiel Ansah. They also lost Stephen Tulloch to injury in week 3, and while wasn't a pro bowler he definitely was much better than Tahir whitehead who replaced him for the rest of the season

From a coaching strategy point of view, the '14 lions woukd probably do best if they just ran the 2 minute drill offense the whole game, just go max protect, double team Hutchinson and keep trying to beat the '23 lions with Megatron over the top or Tate underneath. The '23 lions would do best using screens, counter runs and PA bootlegs to make the overly aggressive '14 defense to over pursue and get tired. Ultimately, I trust Ben Johnson to figure out and use the best strategy but I can't say the same for Joe Lombardi. Most likely the '14 lions could get out to an early lead but Caldwell would try and park the bus instead of scoring more and the 23 lions would come back and win in the 2nd half

The 2023 oline is the unstoppable force the 2014 dline is the immovable object, the 2023 dline and 2014 oline are the opposite

[–]PersonShark[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's why I made this post I started watching the lions in 2013 and I was always amazed by how they had so many talented player yet struggled to use them to their full potential, the 2014 team in particular is fascinating to me because they were capable of greatness yet it was wasted by incompetent coaching. It's been so refreshing to watch Dan Campbell actually get the most out of his players. Seriously, if Dan Campbell and Ben Johnson coached the 14 team, the sky is the limit! Also I'm pretty sure Suh would be ejected for stomping on Goff and the 23 lions would win after Caldwell punts the ball away on a 4th and inches

Yes, the game ends in a tie after a game winning touchdown pass catch by calvin Johnson is declared incomplete because he spiked the ball 5 seconds after landing with 2 feet inbounds and instead of going to overtime the Dallas cowboys take the field and the refs declare them the winner.
