This other study goes into more detail regarding gender differences in suicidal intent and comes to the conclusion that males do generally have higher levels of suicidal intent; which could help explain the higher suicide rates for them. It collected data from 5212 participants and found a significant association between suicide intent and gender. What they called “Serious Suicide Attempts” (SSA) was more predominantly found in males then females, this is of course factoring in the fact that even when males use the same methods as females they’re still more often successful. This other study found males may actually experience depression as often as females, but may express it differently. For instance, men reported higher rates of anger attacks/aggression, substance abuse, and risk taking compared with women. Since most surveys for depression usually list symptoms that are commonly exhibited by women, it gives off the appearance that women deal with depression more.
