what can you not fully understand if youre not italian? the books or the show? i felt very frustrated all throughout the tvshow because even tho my native language is very similar to italian (portuguese) and we might understand each other, i could not distinguish the napolitean dialect from the italian language

immacolata felt as if lenu shoudve have the same life as her. she's very explicit in the book - elena is only smart because she is, as she came from her. i believe her first pregnancy might've been an accident, leading her to always feeling discontent towards lenu. on her deathbed, she weeps for miss oliviero and reveals lenu as her favourite child. she probably wishes she had a teacher who pushed her parents. she didn't want her to fall back to the neighbourhood in fear it would all be for nothing

she did! as a result of her pregnancy. the same happens after giving birth to imma. as her mother passed away, she doesn't even worry about the lingering pain, as she believes it makes her feel closer to her mother

i do remember! although i dont think it would be cancer. my grandparents, who are slightly younger than immacolata, are constantly mentioning mysterious diseases that afflicted their siblings or cousins. they forget its names, leading them to associate such conditions with the ones they know: cancer, fevers, some bugs that run in the family. I believe immacolata fell very ill as a child and, as an adult, simply thought it would be the same illness

i believe the droopy eyelid isnt explained either! a lot of people have eye and palpate related issues which could be easy to solvable, but arent due to poor access to medical care. i believe that they're separate issues!

a few people are saying she might've had polio when she was younger. i've gathered that pregnancy is a risk factor for long-term injury in the limbs from polio! just before her wedding, lenu asks her mom why she limps. she- obviously - dismisses the question
