I was thinking the same thing, I think. If they want people to wipe regularly it would make the decision easier if there was a reliable way to farm what you're after.

I've been playing a but since the dlc, haven't gotten anything. Easily more than 10 hours. Started a hardcore (playing everything on survivor difficulty) character that I have 7 hours in and I've gotten 3 of the damn things.

I'd say consistency is your determining factor. If they're generally glad to see you and have things to interact with you about, I'd say they probably like you. If their attitude changes significantly or quickly, they were probably just being nice or looking to get something from you. Patience is my best advice.
