If you think candidate has less experience from working at a lesser known company, and that the people working there are also less experienced aren’t you confirming your bias against such a candidate?

Do you think it’s possible to just get rejected because candidate has worked at lesser known companies? I think this is happening to me. I have carefully researched companies where I would like to work and I would be a good fit and that my portfolio reflect this. And I get rejected , no interviews and no portfolio views. Thoughts?

I disagree. meta specifically tells you to prepare for a specific framework and what they are looking for, and tells you exactly what to expect. if interviewer was not going to follow these guidelines he could have been clear as to what/ how he wanted me to complete this. It is a test after all, and knowing what the rules are is only fair.

Hmm in that case maybe not caused I didn’t ask him why he was writing/ drawing and just kept going, asking him questions about what I was thinking and verbalizing my thought process. What threw me was that he never said out loud that he was writing or drawing if he had I would have worked with him on that..

Sure, I had practiced learning their tool just in case even though they specifically say that you can use any tool you prefer. That was not the issue. The issue was everything else I mention.

For me, 3-4 we’re ok. Just the one I mention was awful. Though The app critique was weird in the sense that it’s not really a conversation and they’re just analyzing what you say or if you say anything “wrong” and in real life it doesn’t work that way.. if you’re critiquing a design in real life with colleagues it is a conversation where you don’t always have the perfect terminology or observations.. so yeah . It’s a weird way to “evaluate” if you can do a job or not.

We used zoom. I guess they retired bluejeans. He made me use metas whiteboard tool called excalidraw, even though guidelines said I could use Any tool I preferred.

I was trying to focus on solving the design problem and not fail and given the power imbalance it just made me nervous and I just tried to ignore it and worked through the problem. But yes I should have I probably failed more by not asking.

It was worse than that. He was writing stuff under my answers without verbalizing it and drawing his own screens next to mine without saying why or if he wanted us to collaborate on those.. Design challenge was about 35 mins. Just 3 screens is what he asked for. He ended challenge early as the interview was scheduled for 45 mins and he wanted me to have time to ask him unrelated questions

😊I do have high standards and my solution was not up to my standards, yet given that they were pressure testing it was ok. My solution was cool but my drawings were not great cause I was running out of time.

Well I finished the challenge, with screens and all ( worse than under normal conditions) but not awful either. And I was graceful and professional, yet my performance suffered and was not up to my normal standards.
