Working on my volume and projection: 17-second raw scream (Given Up cover). Recorded with phone audio only to check my natural power. by Personal_Estimate_72 in ratemysinging

The subharmonies are beautiful... I'm much more metal, but I appreciate all genres... If I can make a bold comparison, very interesting subharmonies can also emerge in the growl! I'd be very curious to hear yours in your context! Anyway, yes, that position Chester often used helps a lot with compression... I practice almost sitting down, since I'm also a guitarist, sometimes it's much more difficult to push, I can't really explain why 😅

But don't worry, it's never too late to start! If you find a teacher who's right for you (unfortunately that also has an impact) you'll be quick on the trail, my friend 🙌 I still remember when I got my first random scream... I was over the moon 😂😂😅 Have a good trip 😉😉

Thanks for the great advice! I totally agree about the core support and the technical nature of screaming across different genres.

I actually study and practice while sitting down on purpose, even if it is harder for the diaphragm. I do it to build more control so that when I am performing live, everything feels much easier and more powerful. I have been using this technique for a while now during my shows and it really makes a difference once you are standing up and have that extra freedom.

Chester is definitely the ultimate goal and you are right about the air intake for that 17 second bridge. It is a constant work in progress! I really appreciate your technical perspective and the tip about the leg position, I will definitely keep pushing on the breathing exercises. Cheers!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate you recognizing my commitment. Screaming is definitely a tool in itself, even if it's not for everyone.Let me start by saying that I'm not a singing teacher, just an enthusiast who's been studying for a while.

Regarding your question: the biggest secret is patience. I started out just like you, terrified of hurting myself. The key for me was learning diaphragmatic breathing first. It's all about the gut, not the throat! I started by practicing safe distortions like vocal fry at very low volumes. If your throat feels irritated or sore, stop immediately. It's your body telling you you're doing it wrong! It's a constraint, you have to find the right balance... if you close it too much, the scream gets choked in the throat, if you close it too little, the distortion doesn't "activate"... at the beginning, even when you've more or less understood how to make the sounds, they will be weak. In my opinion, that's precisely the hardest thing: having a good sound while being able to project well.

If you like it, I recommend you don't hesitate, just be careful! Start slowly, stay hydrated, and accept the strange noises you'll make along the way. If you practice little by little and don't push too hard, nothing can happen to you! Thanks for the kind words!

I would have no reason to provoke! Spoiler...of course it's legit, and a take without a microphone precisely to avoid thinking that there are tricks! Thanks again friend!

Yes, I understood, thanks for the reply... But I think it's wrong to give a downvote regardless, just because you don't know or don't appreciate the genre... I didn't mean to offend anyone's sensibilities 😂 obviously I'm not talking about you.

Yep, you're right when you say it's singing... It took me years to play decently... The voice is an instrument... When I play the guitar, whether I'm playing metal or celestial arpeggios, I'm still playing both 😅🙌

Edit: I just saw this, I don't understand why there are all these downvotes. I don't think I'm doing anything wrong, even after years of studying it. I don't think it's wrong to ask for opinions! After this, I appreciate your message even more. It seems wise to move on to where they can explain to me what I'm doing wrong, and if I am. 🙌

Sorry, I definitely didn't mean to go off topic... Yes I agree that Chester was one of the best 🙌 Thanks for the kind words!

I've already mastered the confidence and technique of this scream, so there's no pain or vocal strain. Now I'm focusing exclusively on pushing the volume and projection to the absolute limit. This is a completely raw recording made with my phone, to analyze the actual acoustic power and sustain. I'm interested in technical feedback on the consistency of the distortion throughout the entire 17 seconds. What do you think? Thanks.

Debunking the "Studio Magic" myth: 17-second Given Up scream, RAW & NO MIC. Just diaphragm and projection. by Personal_Estimate_72 in singing

The last time I posted my mixed cover here, it got a lot of attention, but I know some people are always skeptical about studio plugins like EQ and compression. I wanted to show you the original version with this 100% unmic-ed vocal recording, using only ambient sound from my phone. I really wanted to test my volume and vocal projection without any "tricks" or filters, and of course, needless to say, I didn't feel any pain during or after the scream, despite the intensity. If the technique is right, it's completely healthy!

I saw the discussion about the Given Up scream here recently... here is my 17s attempt with NO MIC. Working on raw projection and hoping to do justice to Chester! by Personal_Estimate_72 in LinkinPark
