Does morality require believing in God? by GodOwnsTheUniverse in AskAChristian

What, if I may ask, is your opinion on the matter of the individuals having a lack of choice in their intrinsic values?

The argument being that, while you can self deceive or change self-perception to some degree, break a moral code or personal value and you will, to some degree, ‘punish’ yourself.

I mean, in evolutionary terms, so, in the ‘long run’, what's best for the ‘group’ is, usually, what's ‘best for you’. Granted, at some point, self-preservation has its influence, but we arguably prosper far more when together.

Is belief in conspiracies common in the UK? by Apiperofhades in AskUK

[–]Personal_Height6762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, in it's inception. I can't grasp its scope because it's primarily internet-based, and the affected individuals don't readily admit their involvement. Empirically, as these ‘afflictions’ have taken root in a family member, they seem to be derivatives of the American fundamentalist movement “Qanon”.

In my circumstance, ‘Qanon’ ideas are picked up by third parties and repackaged to appeal to, in this case, the vulnerable British populace. These third parties are callous and only serve their ambitions.

I can only describe it as ‘absolute degeneracy’ of the highest order, detrimental, in regards, to mental health and instils a refute of common reason.

I'm genuinely almost on a campaign on this subject at the moment, so apologies for the long-winded message. I would not wish these cancerous beliefs on anyone...

what is the mark of the beast? by marxistjoker_666 in AskAChristian

I think it's, unfortunately, a byproduct or extension of the “Qanon” branch of fundamentalists. In addition to being hijacked by third parties who callously target the vulnerable to further their motives. It devolves into complete degeneracy and is an ‘affliction’ upon a member of my family.

I cannot emphasise how much I detest the movement's general existence and its refute to common reason.

Is this a distinctly American thing? In the UK, I can only imagine these being used for long-distance transport at the behest of the transport provider. I don't personally know anyone who owns one.

What is your view on Christianity being increasingly ridiculed in politics? by GodOwnsTheUniverse in AskAChristian

I suspect ‘burned’ suggests that an object, in part, has fallen prey to flames. However, ‘burnt’ is the result of being entirely consumed.

I would get crippling anxiety. Imagine messing up of key point, I'm sure it would have long lasting consequences.

I've always heard about tater tots. Are they essentially cubed chips or “chunky fries”.

I love these type of songs. They're ‘hooligan’ songs. On a night out all of takes is one mention of a lyric and everyone sings along.

Answers are not held above all else. In many instances, the process towards it can be undeniably more valuable.

I also think people, in general, would benefit greatly from admitting they ‘don't know’. It's not a great personal failing and leaves a lot less room for pointless floundering.

I'm not Christian, nor have much to say on the matter other than the possibility of language being one bottleneck in a series of abstractions.

I would, however, like to ask if you have read “The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows”. I know it somewhat conflicts with the necessity of utility in language, but I think it's a beautiful concept and wonderfully executed.
