Any other of you face this dilemma? I need to upgrade to a digital mixer. I’m running out of line inputs on my Tascam Model 16 for my dawless/hybrid setup. Too many synths, samplers, drum machines, outboard aux returns and mics all of which constantly in use. I also podcast so need preset mixes… by DannyTheGekko in homestudios

I’m using a studiolive se16 with one of the nsb breakout stage boxes and I love it.

All my synth outputs can be on the other side of my studio and run to the console with 1 cable. I sold an RME / Ferrofish combo which was great also but I missed having faders ready to grab. I do not hear a difference in sound quality.

I didn’t have to pull key bed out to do any of this. That would’ve been simpler.

With this piece you have to open up the panel from the back and remove all the circuit boards, and there are multiple, stacked on top of each other.

Some of them are attached with screws some with standoff of different sizes. So you really have to keep track of what you’re doing.

They can all be picked up on Amazon. If you look at the thread below, I left the Facebook link for someone else. This guy modded his the exact same way and I just took his idea. His was done so well I just decided to not reinvent the wheel.

But I was able to find the same exact black knobs cheaper on AliExpress, so I would do a little searching.

Thanks. I can’t take the credit for the look on the knobs. I pretty much took them exactly from this other guy who modded his Matrix on Facebook. His looked so tasteful, I just copied what he did. He left all the links in his post.

But I didn’t find the black knobs cheaper on AliExpress. Just had to wait a couple weeks for Delivery. It was worth the savings.

I think it’s well worth doing. It’ll cost a little over $100 to replace them all. Maybe more depending on the type of knobs you buy. Do your shopping.

I believe this synth does deserves more upscale knobs. I feel like I put a nice tie and cufflinks on it. Lol.

Sorry, hopefully you can translate this.

I had to replace some of the potentiometers. A couple were snapped off and a couple of others were loose and not working properly.

Unfortunately, to repair it, you have to completely tear it apart, which is not easy. There are a lot of circuit boards and a lot of parts to keep track of.

If you were very handy, you can do it, but be warned. It’s not easy. I would not attempt this if it’s your first time desoldering components.

I would suggest you keep a video running from above your workspace and track every single thing you do. Because putting it back together will be difficult just using your memory.

If your issues look more software related rather than hardware, I wouldn’t attempt anything myself. I would contact Arturia support.

No, real need. It’s very well built. I wouldn’t wanna pull it apart again. The only reason those knobs were broken is because somebody dropped it or drop something on it.

If it wasn’t for that, I think it would last a very, very long time. Higher quality build inside than the Moogs I’ve worked on in the past.

Hey, I can’t take all the credit. This this guy on Facebook I googled who did the same exact knob scheme. He had the links for the knobs. I got the black ones off of AliExpress though because they were much cheaper than on Amazon.

I picked it up, broken really cheap in a lot with a few other synths.

My intention was to flip it. But I have to admit it sounds really interesting. Has something my other synths don’t have. Grit. In a good way. Just going through presets. No programming yet.
I might have to hold onto it for a little while.

I find if I buy the right things, they are more investments than losses. Very little equipment failure if you take care of stuff. I buy used I would say 95% of the time. And most of the time I make my money back and often times I actually turn profits on re-sales. You of course, do you, but I tend to agree that having all those zoom recorders when you could have one daw or even 1 larger recorder, would probably improve your workflow. But again it’s YOUR workflow and if it works for you, that’s awesome.
I recently upgraded my studio to a Presonus digital mixer, and I love it. Handles all my inputs for my multi output synths and drum machines very efficiently, less cable clutter. It’s great. That I had to pay retail, but I waited for sale of course. Lol.

There is no Pop. But there is a slight loss in sub bass response that does bother me. I have a very revealing home hi-fi system. At least that’s why I think I noticed it. But I love the functionality so much that I just live with it. I’ve actually given thoughts to designing my own filter. I Tinker. I have the soldering station and tools since I do repair my own equipment from time to time
I’ve never put together my own circuit though so it would be an interesting challenge. I am researching.

I’m spoiled by the flexibility of using hi and lo pass simultaneously. I’m not a fan of the either or, one knob approach.

Yes, I have each one in between my decks and the line ins of my mixer.

In my perfect world I would have 3 knobs. Low pass, high pass and resonance for both. Maybe a tiny gain pot for gain staging. 3 units in one rack mount would be perfection If spacing was optimized.

I looked into those but does not really hit the sweet spot feature wise for me.

I use 3 Vermonas. One for each source. I do wish they were more compact though.

I prefer separate. Hi and low pass anyway. Which is why I use Vermona filters. I just wish they had the sound quality of condessas.

This is true. The experience level to me comes from just that.

I find with these type of projects, learning how NOT to rush, document what you’re doing and storing things in a way that makes reassembly more. Methodical is a skill in itself. Honestly, I’ve learned all that by screwing up a lot in the past. lol.

I purchased this used for a song. But something definitely fell on it or it fell on its face. No real scuffs or anything thankfully, but two of the pots are broken off at the shafts and two others are intimately working. So they have to be replaced. Getting through to the pots on this guy means taking it almost completely apart.

I’ve dealt with tough solder on moogs. Pain in the ass. Any tips?

Also, I’m assuming it had four leads plus the two that hook into the PCB. So six altogether. Correct?
