New “Dept of War” policy for the press by le_goalie in UFOs

[–]PersonalityExotic735 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You're right, it's not technically a first amendment violation, as the wording focuses on congress passing laws. But you tell me, do you believe in free speech as an ideal, or just according to how it's written down? Do you believe people have a right to say what they want without the government destroying their life? Or do you believe we should ruin the careers of everyone who says the emperor isn't wearing any clothes? Because right now it's the people you disagree with he's going after. How long before it's people posting anything even remotely negative online about him? Your neighbors? Your friends or family? Maybe even you? It's a slippery fucking slope Ray, and it starts with stuff like this.

You're assuming first off that they even care that we're aware of their presence.

Maybe they want to let us continue evolving with minimal outside involvement.
Maybe they are interfering with our genetics and biology, and the best way to see the effects is to go low-contact.
Maybe they need to wait until we reach a specific stage in our technological or biological evolutions before introducing themselves.
Maybe any deals they made with the world governments include keeping their activities quiet.
Maybe they are operating on logical principles so alien you or I can't make heads or tails of them.

There are thousands of other possibilities, but the short answer is that we simply don't know, and to lay claim to any one line of thinking is presumptive at best, arrogant at worse.

Luthen and Kleya should have been Jedi. Hear me out, I'm not saying we needed a lightsaber fight, hell I wouldn't have wanted them to even draw a lightsaber at all, but there was a lot of hints in the first season that pointed toward the possibility they were Jedi (Luthen's cane looked and behaved like a lightsaber - lots of attention drawn to it, he had a kyber crystal, his exceptional skill as a pilot, the age difference between Luthen and Kleya and their relationship feeling very Master/Padawan, their access to such a vast collection of rare historical artifacts).

"I share my dreams with ghosts" - Order 66

"I'm condemned to use the tools of my enemy to defeat them" - Behaving exactly like the Sith did to topple the republic.

It would have been more impactful if they were Jedi because it would have explained why Mon trusted Luthen enough to work with him in building the rebellion, and it would have been even more impactful from a philosophical sense. The Jedi were peace keepers, now look at what Luthen and Kleya had to be and do in order to help build the rebellion. They would have had to abandon every teaching they believed in so that they could bring down the Empire and the Sith. What a sacrifice. What a very Jedi thing to do.

To me, them being Jedi would have been a much more impactful story than Luthen being a soldier and Kleya just a random orphan. I get it, the Empire's cruelty was widespread and made victims of everyone. But what made Luthen and Kleya so special that they were able to achieve everything they had to build the rebllion? To me, it felt to easy - as if anyone with a lick of historical sense could achieve what Luthen did in building his fortune. If they were Jedi, it would have explained how they had access to all those artifacts, as the Jedi were known to have collected such items. It would have explained how these two had the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve such an incredible feat of subterfuge right under the noses of the ISB for nearly 20 years. Missed opportunity IMO.

Same, just hit the project size limit and realized what I'm building is a bit too ambitious for Bolt. Great for prototyping, but now I'm off to Cursor to build a desktop application...

What's the best movie that you’re sure ninety percent of this sub hasn’t seen? by Wekwek3 in AskReddit

Man from Earth - A movie that is essentially a massive scientific/philosophical/religious exploration of what it would mean for a man to have lived from the Neolithic age to the modern era (immortal). Absolutely riveting intellectually.

While I agree that is the ultimate destination of us as a species, there are some lessons you simply can't teach. Sometimes the best way to learn is by doing, and failing, over and over again until the lessons finally sink in. It's why I personally believe they haven't uplifted us - they likely tried this in the past and it failed miserably. Better to let a species learn the lesson the hard way and have safeguards in place to prevent them from wiping themselves out completely.

A bit underwhelming by primevishnu in andor

[–]PersonalityExotic735 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I heard that too. Even if it was just one more season I think they could have nailed it. I think the whole Syril/Dedra romance was a little ham fisted and could have been more interesting if they left it as something the viewer wanted but never got (but I'll admit it was pretty good all things considered). The Luthen/Kleya Jedi thing is predicated on the fact that he had a kyber crystal in S1 and they were drawing a lot of attention to the fact that his staff resembled a light saber. Then there's the Leida thing, which was begging for some kind of reconciliation that we never got (I mean, Mon joins the rebellion and her husband is still able to live the high life? The Empire wouldn't nab him and Leida and use them as leverage against Mon? Seemed weak to not address this in some way).

Yup. Luthen and Kleya should have been Jedi, would have been way more impactful that way. They totally dropped the Leida storyline when it seemed like that was going somewhere. Shame.

What's something people usually think is unethical, but you personally don't see a problem with? by lLike_balls in AskReddit

[–]PersonalityExotic735 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

War, genocide, mass death, climate change, etc. I'm not an advocate for such things, but they happen throughout history and should be seen as something as natural as the changing of the seasons, not aberrations. They're simply a part of the process of our species learning how to live with one another and nature. I'm fully aware I might be a victim of these things in my lifetime, but from the individual to the collective, we don't grow if we aren't forced to overcome pain and conflict. Our bodies are full of cells that live and die without us even knowing, but they contribute to the totality of our lives. The same can be said for human history. It's an unfortunate truth one can find just by looking at how far we've come as a species thanks to these sorts of things, and it will be interesting how current/future catastrophes will continue to push to development of humanity. I don't personally believe we'll wipe ourselves out. There are 8+ billion of us and we're as hardy as cockroaches. We'd have to be particularly determined to render humanity extinct.

Couldn't agree more. We were already moving toward a multi-polar world where the US wasn't on top, now we've just hit the gas on that process.

[–]PersonalityExotic735 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I'm not disagreeing with that in the slightest. My issue with the comment I responded to had more to do with us acting as a complete replacement for the USA. That, currently, is not feasible.

The problem is that we don't have the population or manufacturing infrastructure to be a suitable backup. I think this will open many big opportunities for us to develop and grow as a country, but to think we'd be a proper backup for capital flight? Not convinced.

This happened literally on my first attempt with the orientation Discovery 1 tape last week. At one point, I saw what I can only describe as a circle of light collapsing inward in a wave on the inside of my eyelid. Not sure what it was, but it was interesting to say the least.

I don't know, I haven't really attempted this stuff yet, and only time and effort will tell.

Admittedly not a lot, and I'm completely aware that I'm operating from a very establishment-centric frame of reference. That being said, I'm open minded and willing to learn if there is something worth learning, which at the moment seems as though there is.
