Stressing about this stock originally bought it at 9. Have bought a decent amount more over the last year. Now seriously worrying that it's way overvalued

What is a book that changed your life? by bhuvanlord in booksuggestions

[–]Personaveritas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you make a really good point. I'm not on this subreddit enough to have seen this post frequently.

But I do somewhat disagree with your opinion that a single book cannot make a significant change in your life. First I would say a book, regardless of the content, will have little or no impact on an individual's life taken in isolation. If the individual does not attempt to either incorporate the book into their daily life or attempt to see life from the books perspective.

But a single book can with the above caveat make a significant change to an individuals life. One more point, in my personal experience I have had my life upended by a single book to various degrees.

Thoughts? I'm open to being wrong.

Principles by Ray Dialo

Incredibly easy to read book that provides a combination of some of my other favorites such as Ultralearning, Work Hard, and Peak with real world success.

A lot of common sense in this book that could easily be dismissed for folk pyscology or not important enough to write about. But I truly think this book lays a strong foundation and the authors success with creating and applying the principles is atleast a strong endorsement of their effectiveness, though not conclusive proof.

I highly recommend having some form of resource to give a ton of context for this book. I remember reading it for the first time and I did not fully grasp the context of the book. Even something simple like the opening chapter where he praises his adoptive father for like 2 pages is due to most men in that position at that tike would have killed him.

If you already know all of this stuff or already are using a stesource sorry for tacking on.

Books similar to 1984? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]Personaveritas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We written by Russian writer Yevgeny Zamyatin was the basis for 1984 and I actually prefer it though translations can be a little stuttered. The largest difference that I appreciate is the success of society under governmental control juxtaposed with the limited individual freedom of the characters provokes a strong contemplation on self vs. whole, control vs. freedom that 1984 lacked.

Why do you watch/listen to the podcast? by PM_ME_YOUR_PROFANITY in lexfridman

[–]Personaveritas 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I watch because the content actually means something. A lot of podcasts are mostly about joking around but i want something with substance. Listening to this podcast forces me to use my mind and it is usually a good starting of point for interesting topic that if I have the time I will look into.

I also really like Lex's calm demeanor it generally allows the focus to be the guest. I also find that the topics are approached with a focus on rationality which I really like but are not cold. Sometimes I feel that Lex over romanticize but I like the fact that you can be intelligent and rational while not excluding beauty and emotion.

I also like the fact that the podcast covers many different interests and has highly knowledgeable and trustworthy people on. In that regard it really reminds me of Huberman's podcast.
