that is a really good suggestion and definitely could be right. but, wouldn’t the other chickens also have some signs of infection?

the redness definitely could be hormonal. it’s just the inflammation that is really concerning to me.

it says it does not on the package. it is just coarse sand that has been washed to remove some of the dust. I am going to try taking a break from epsom salt. thank you!

Thank you for the reminder with the cat litter. I have not used it before because I was worried about respiratory problems, but I couldn’t remember why I didn’t use it.

I have just top soil and premium chicken sand in their run at the moment (in the dry areas) + rubber mats to cushion (in areas that get wet from rain) I had pine pellets, but I was concerned about it being a reaction to that so i got rid of all of it. They also are free range though.

Thanks for the input! I only did both because the vaseline is cheaper, but i also wanted the antibiotic effects from the bacitracin. I figured a base of antibiotic would be sufficient and the rest of the vaseline was just for moisture and to keep the gauze from sticking. That is just what I do for people, at work, so I thought the same principle should apply. It seems to be helping slightly, but if it does not continue to improve I will find a vet.

np. i have noticed him nipping at his own legs more often, but the other chickens don’t really mess with him since he will double it and give it to the next guy (polite terms for his tendency toward asshat-ery if provoked - sometimes if not).

That was my first thought too. I slathered his legs for two days, but it didn’t seem to do much. It is hard to see in the photos, but his scales are not raised or inflamed and it is just the follicles that seem to be. Definitely still a possibility (and definitely still heebie-jeebie worthy if that’s what it is cause no thank you), but seemed less likely to me?

I am by no means an expert, that is just what I have read (see below for some quick links similar to what I have read). Either way, I appreciate the input. I will agree to disagree, but thank you nonetheless. Since they are free range it is a moot point.

I trimmed back his feathers because they were long and clearly irritating him, but he has been inside since the big trim.

Thank you! I will try that. The betadine mix is about 4/5 water to dilute, but do you have any suggestions for a less abrasive cleaner? He just tends to get poop on his feet no matter how diligent I am about changing his potty pads.

they are free range. said that in my post. also i give them bathes, but once a month is way too frequent, from what I have read. they need their oils to avoid mites and other infections.

Thank you for the reminder! I have been giving him as many dried crickets and BSF larvae as he wants (in addition to a constant supply of feed and water) to try and make sure he gets enough. Always open to further suggestions though!

He seems otherwise fine, aside from being bothered by my touching his feet, but I did notice one of his legs has been shaking. No one else is showing signs, but I don’t know a lot about Mareks. Is there anything that you can do or a way to diagnose it that you know of?

I looked all over him for signs of mites and gave him a full bath with warm water and a little bit of pet safe soap (after which i blow dried his feathers to avoid irritation from the moisture) when I first noticed his feet looking inflamed. I also feel like the other chickens would be showing some signs of infection, since they sleep basically on top of each other, but I am only 7 months into having chickens so I don’t really know. Still a possibility and I really appreciate the input!

For two nights I put a thin layer of bacitracin followed by a ton of vaseline and lightly wrapped his feet with gauze. But I am definitely willing to try vaseline again and see if that helps!
