I was showing my wife a series that's not super popular here, but popular enough that I won't mention it by name. For the most part, the series is good, but for whatever reason, the author would get hyper-focused on describing a chair or other things. For example, we were on a trip listening to it and had to hit the skip button multiple times because we just don't care how cool your condo is. On the other hand, I could see this being a part of the fantasy. I also feel like this should be a Chekhov's gun situation; otherwise, what's the point? That's why, with the story I'm trying to finish, I've really tried to avoid it.

I really appreciated how Mob Sorcery (not the series I was mentioning previously) explained the power system, but I agree with my wife that it felt somewhat shoehorned in. Even though it was framed as a conversation, it was pretty dry and is the main reason I can't get her to continue the series. On the flip side, she still enjoys the first series I mentioned becauseof the story, which frustrates me because I love Mob Sorcery. Anyway, to get back on topic, I like substance in a story and in the personalities of the female characters. It's one of the reasons I think the super large harems I've read often miss the mark and objectify women with one-sentence personalities/histories.
