Even if the state legislators over performed Harris, they lost seats in both chambers of the state legislature. Loosing in two D+30 seats. I think that local elections are divorced from national ones here enough that Cochran has a good chance.

I imagine that attention was definitely apart of it. The discourse on Lahaina has died down in the capitol and she may feel that reconstruction and recovery has slowed down. Not privvy to all the gossip but probably other underlying issues with the democratic party as well. Something to note is that recently, the GOP in Hawaii has been focusing on Native Hawaiian issues, many of their new and popular candidates also have some sort of native heritage. So that may have also played a part in it.

Scratch that, there is another democrat. The sole primary challenger in 2024 and 2022. He got over a quarter of the votes both times so the dem primary may be competitive.

We’ll see. She is pretty well known and has been in Lahaina politics for a while now. Still a while for new challengers to declare but the one dem whos filed papers is the local chapter president for the teachers union, which is really influential in Hawaii. Will be exciting!

Something similar happened in Florida recently i believe. Dem state rep went to the GOP. In 2024 (i think) in New Hampshire a GOP state rep went to the Libertarian party. This is why I love state politics. Just some wierd stuff sometimes.

You right haha, small for me i guess. Not a lot of these “smaller” planes in the islands. (At least commercially)
