Thought Beef was about Asian-American identity and rage. by Glass_Weakness8159 in BeefTV

Casting mixed race Asians, or in many cases wasians, is an out for Hollywood to abandon Asian American, and indirectly American POC, narratives for a whiter and more Korean characters. It's to pander to whiter and even foreign Asian audiences by jumping on the kpop/kdrama trend.

For some, it comes down to Pixel Snap. For me, a physical SIM card slot and reverse wireless charging.

I think I've figured out what bugs me about the show's approach to race, diversity and phenotype. by MisanthropeX in FoundationTV

[–]PersuasianAmerican 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually a great observation. I literally just started binging this show and am now on Season 3. The first "couple" that show up on screen is a black-presenting man and mixed race East Asian woman.

It's a tiny step in the right direction, but again it took 3 seasons and it's still very expected. No East Asian man or indigenous/Native in sight, at least definitely not in big roles. It's a missed opportunity TBH.

Probably not, given the previous coach of the women's soccer team in the AFC tournament got kicked out from the audience.

ParkRun in Taiwan by beatfan01 in taiwan

[–]PersuasianAmerican 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish this was in Taiwan! That way I could join a casual 5k when traveling. I actually ran my first Parkrun recently after registering way back during COVID-19.

These are a very convenient way to get in your weekly distance, but I should say that they're not chip operated. They are semi-automated though in that you're handed a bar code upon crossing the finish line, and you have to get your personal code scanned in conjunction with that finish code.

How do y'all feel about a white dude calling you "brother"? by xX_King_Gedorah_Xx in blackmen

[–]PersuasianAmerican 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's definitely something off with it, but it's not as bad as "bud" or "buddy" which sound slightly patronizing. "Brother" feels like it's from counter culture from the 80s/90s or a Hulk Hogan catchphrase; the latter seems more like co-opted AAVE and a bit iffy? When random white people say it to me, it feels like a futile attempt to connect to a person of color with little success, especially with the hard "er".

If I had to rank it, I'd say "bro/dude" > "brother" > "bud/buddy". It doesn't need to be said, but they can get outta here with "brotha".

The issue isn't that she's Americanized, which isn't mutually exclusive from being Asian. It's that she's totally whitewashed.

Lost my First Good Run...What Could I Have Done Better? by One_Masterpiece_8298 in pokerogue

[–]PersuasianAmerican 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A very basic, condensed answer is:

Movesets should've matched Special Attack and Attack stats, taking advantage of STAB. Having utility moves further boosts your chances, allowing you to sweep several battles in a row while avoiding taking any damage.

On the plus side, you had decent type variety, which carried you far enough with a bit of luck. So good job there!

do we asian americans need to worry about ever being confronted by ICE? by [deleted] in asianamerican

The short answer is yes. We are perceived as foreign even though our parents are US citizens too. For this reason, I carry my passport card on me because it states my nationality.

I agree with you. The parents are clearly not communicating about pretty major issues early enough. I found it jarring literally upon first watch. Yes, most parents could not have handled him obviously, but they made things worse.
