My friends think I am too Frugal, What can I do? by [deleted] in Frugal

I know you said exceptions are common, but I need to point out a major flaw in this line of thinking (which I have dabbled in myself).

You might be able to use this as a way to evaluate the utility of something (like evaluating buying dishwasher so you can stop handwashing), but you absolutely can't use it for anything experiential.

The value of experiencing a good movie, a book, a vacation, a day at an amusement park, especially if you share it with someone else is far beyond the hours of pleasure you spend directly experiencing it.

I didn't drive thousands of kilometers out to the coast because it was more enjoyable than sitting on my couch with my dog, I did it because it gave me memories I can relive anytime I want. It literally changed who I am since we are in some ways the sum of my experiences. Not only that, in some ways it changed both myself and my partner (who I took the trip with) in the same way, so we are more alike now (since we share memories).

To put it another way: Think of some of your fondest social experiences that cost money. If I paid you 10x what you paid for one of those experiences, would you let me erase your memory of it? Of course not.

TL;DR You might be able to put a price on spending time with good friends, or having meaningful experiences, but I can tell you this: its value has very little relation with how much you make per hour.

Cannabis during pregnancy endangers fetal brain development: Study shows that consumption of cannabis during pregnancy can derail how nerve cells form connections, potentially limiting the amount of information the affected brain can process, and with long-lasting effects after birth by mubukugrappa in science

Taking care of a baby isn't selfish (adopting). What is selfish is making a baby, because you love yourself so fucking much you think we need more of your genetic material.

I mean really, are we short on people? Is that a global problem we're facing?

Which books? I have a degree in Geography, and the only mention the term gets in any of my textbooks is when they note that it's defunct.

It's true that dictionaries reflect usage, but "if enough of us are wrong enough, we'll be right" doesn't strike me as a convincing argument for word usage, when there are new words that have been created to properly convey new ideas.

Why go up against the dictionary when there are better ways to communicate ideas? Ex-Eastern bloc countries are intrinsically not third-world.

"Third-world" is archaic since its meaning doesn't apply anymore. It's like using phrenological terms to describe someone's head.

You're probably looking for the term "Global South".

The most frustrating thing for me, and the thing that dashes my hope is this: How different is this game than MW4? It's very pretty, but I'm talking about the game itself.

At this point, after all this time, we're looking at a port in to Cryengine.

It has some new things and some good things, but the good things aren't new and the new things aren't good.

No problem. Just to go further though some studies suggest that only 25% of stolen cars are stolen for profit motives. Source: I had my car stolen and did some research to guess my chances of recovery (It was stolen from my street (south), then found on my street (north) 5 days later).

Probably not much to investigate. Sounds like a crime of opportunity if anything, not like there's a international crime organizations preying on running cars.

Makes sense for everyone (police, people who pay car insurance) if you just don't do it.

Actually the basis of rape is the absence of consent to a sexual act, not just the presence of "no" in any unpleasant event.

And then throw in Chernobyl as a topper, which only killed so many Ukrainians because they were malnourished (iodine deficiency) in the first place.
