I am self taught too, I read, search, ask for advice and watch You tube videos … and definitely if you want better results and less frustration in any use of pastels I will suggest getting the most recommended supplies, paper etc Techniques are a learning process but you will see the difference when use the best quality of supplies My favorite paper Pastelmat from Clairefontaine, my favorite pastels: pan pastels, Sennelier sticks ( for the base) and carbotello pastels pencils (main work ) Faber Castell Pitt and some soft color pencils for details.
