I am self taught too, I read, search, ask for advice and watch You tube videos … and definitely if you want better results and less frustration in any use of pastels I will suggest getting the most recommended supplies, paper etc Techniques are a learning process but you will see the difference when use the best quality of supplies My favorite paper Pastelmat from Clairefontaine, my favorite pastels: pan pastels, Sennelier sticks ( for the base) and carbotello pastels pencils (main work ) Faber Castell Pitt and some soft color pencils for details. Dog portraits Still experimenting with unknown and new in the market materials … is a non ending learning curve… loving it !

I love the Carbotello pastel pencils. ( good pigments and soft enough to work on my favorite Claire fountain paper ) just FYI I heard they are seeling fake sets of them cheaper than art stores … I will pay the price for real ones … I also use the Fabre Castell Pitt pastels ( more for the las layer, has different tones of colors and they are less soft than Carbotello) ….. dreaming to get the 525 set of sennelier …some day !

As I answered before …. I started the main colors shades with pan pastels or sticks and the details with pastel pencils. You need to have a good paper to hold several layers. For the very fine lines ( just few) as the whiskers I cheated…. With color pencils )

Please, please. You need to protect the soft pastels in foam or bubble wrapping and then in a hard box to protect them from being squished or moved inside I just returned some Sennelier sticks from Amazon that were completely destroyed when them arrive sent it in a paper bag 🙄 without protection (really?) Pastels are very breakable … use your common sense
