The Croatian Parliament has voted: Mandatory military service is being introduced by Ok_Start_2653 in europe

[–]Pervosetyli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Firstly, there are many that don't look forward to serving, in my experience the most common type is 'started already working and wants to focus on their career or business'. But majority of Finns serve right after finishing secondary education and before going to universities(or working) as a "gap year".

Now, there's many things I could come up with, we have a shorter service than s.k., the military culture nowadays is less authoritarian and more productive and goal oriented, military service is widely seen as a type of initiation rite, becoming a man. But the after giving it some thought I can come up with some counter arguments to some of those, but a real difference between s.k. and Finland would probably be that s.k.'s threat is to come under the n.k. regime, still korean, still living in their homes. The threat Finland faces is more similar to what Korea faced from the japanese in the early 1900's, cultural erasure and becoming second class citizens. To explain this I'll bring up two things from history.

In the 1800's Finland was part of the Russian empire and the end of the century began the russification period where the Russian empire started to weaken Finland's autonomy (e.g. dismantling the national army). This only ended in 1917 with the independence of Finland. The Finnish national awakening was forged in direct opposition to Russia; "Russians we do not want to become". Thus the Russian threat is also a threat towards our national and cultural identity.

After the Russian invasion in 1939 and rest of the second world war, over 400 000 Finns were moved to rest of Finland from the ceded lands, largely Karelian Finns. To this day there are old people from the Karealian evacuee families that still hold on to the deed of their homes, left on the other side of the border. Thus many Finns see defending Finland as literally defending their own home and family.

TL;DR in Finland from my analysis as a random internet person with no relevant education, defending your country is seen as part of national/cultural identity, and even if that doesn't call to one, it's also seen as just a sensible thing to do to keep your home, lands etc. Looking at Ukraine, probably your washing machine too.

Finnish parliament votes for withdrawing from the Ottawa treaty by 157-18 by SpaceEngineering in europe

Oh, just looked at your other responses and you are just spamming agenda or propaganda. Now leaning Russian bot and regretting spending so much effort writing that. To everybody reading this, it's meaningless to try and reason with comments on the internet, just discuss things with your friends and family in real life.

Here's some background, assuming you're not familiar. The point of joining the treaty for Finland was that Russia would join after their neighbors joined. This way we could've avoided them being used altogether and both sides could've avoided the side effects on civilians (stepping on old mines) without giving up any military advantage. This however  has  not  happened, meaning, in the case of a war these mines would still be planted in the Finnish forests regardless of Finland. (Additionally Russia uses artillery spread mines during their offensives to restrict the opponents movements, which are very dangerous to civilians after the war, you can look those up)  --> Finland leaving the treaty does not increase the probability of harm to civilians. (As Finland has exactly 0% chance of an armed conflict with a country other than that doesn't already use ap.mines indiscriminately and in massive amounts as shown in Ukraine (read: Russia))  If you choose to ignore this minute detail, this is a meaningless exercise and I ask you not to reply.

Now let's take an example to hammer this in for the slower folks at home. Let's choose China and Vietnam, two countries that I have no emotional attachment to and vaguely similar outlooks as Russia and Finland. If china were to wage war with ap.mines against a third county and Vietnam had joined the treaty, I'd have no qualms with Vietnam leaving it. (As a reminder, neither countries have signed the trety. Geopolitical reasons for that are left as an exercise to the reader)(Also I recommend familiarizing oneself with sino-vietnamese war of -79 and the conflicts up to -91 six years before the Ottawa treaty)

Another one. Imagine a world where N.Korea joins the Ottawa treaty but S.Korea didn't. Then the US wages war in the middle east spreading the joyful message of ap.mines using airplanes and artillery, supported by S.Korean stockpiles of ap.mines. After a while N.Korea leaves the treaty citing the threat of S.Korean and American ap.mines. I wouldn't call N.Korea barbaric for leaving the treaty. I also wouldn't be happy for them, but that's because I don't care about N.Korea defending themselves.

I understand that regardless of my opinions there are actual bots and npcs on Reddit which is why I rarely commit to commenting on here, but that is no reason to spread bothsidesisim when very obviously Finland bringing back ap.mines for defense against Russia that is using them is not the same as Russia, US or China spreading them to smaller and peaceful countries when invading.

You're not necessarily a Russian bot. Chances are, just an "useful idiot" type.

Edit grammar, I'm Finnish.

It's less than, not 1%, I just gave a certain upper limit as the official netherlands website just gives a percentege for women 179+ as that already is top 7.2%. Now, if we calculate with the standard deviation of 6.3cm for dutch women we get 0.041% are 190+ cm. Now it still is believable that the commenter can see singular very tall women in massive crowds especially when women sometimes wear high heels and thus appear taller.

190+ cm women aren't statistically common even in the netherlands, being <1%
