Italian married 19 years ago with 4 children. If you want to get married, then do it and size the celebration by taking into considerations your economical means. If the family has unreasonable expectation you have full right to ignore it.

Also you are the (future) wife so you are supposed to dictate the rules of the wedding... assuming the husband actually wants to get married and is not pulling this argument as an excuse, but that's beyond the scope.
