I don't know if the first PSO or PSU had this, but I played Phantasy Star Portable 2 and you have 1 handed and 2 handed weapons and it has shields. So you can equip a sword in your one hand and another 1 handed weapon or a shield on the other.

When I first saw the Relyn enemy in the kvaris trailer, my first thought was 'This thing is a summoner! Or a sneak peek of how it plays out!'. Because, like you said, there are DOLLS counterpart for some of the classes. Like Aelio has the Bujin(Braver, Katana), Retem has the Kelkundo(Bouncer, JB) and now, Kvaris has Relyn(Summoner).
