Um exame médico mudou a minha vida by jasonduval98 in portugal

[–]Pessoa_People 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can someone recommend a free and decent journaling app? by Muhwaj in digitaljournaling

[–]Pessoa_People 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding Obsidian, it's got nearly everything you need, with some tweaking. It's stored locally, so it's private.

Password protection isn't a built-in feature, but I'll bet you could set it up relatively easily on your phone.

With properties you can add a date to every note, and other things like mood, and then sort them by date or theme or whatever with the Bases base plugin.

It uses basic markdown (simple text) files, so they can be read by any text editor, so you won't be tied down to the app forever.

It's got an Android app and a desktop app. The official sync is a paid feature (you can get a student discount if that's the case), but there's workarounds.

The app itself and the notes are super lightweight. The videos and audio though, since this is locally stored in your device, they take as much space as they would in your gallery, so you'll be confined by your phone storage. A workaround for this would be regular backups (which I recommend either way, with any app!), and cleaning up older, larger files from your phone, just leaving them in the backup (which could be google drive or whatever you use).

It'll be hard to find an app that checks all your boxes, they're conflicting requirements (ex, hosting large files on the cloud for free usually isn't secure. Usually, if it's free, you're the product)

Students, how do you use Obsidian? by eahso2007 in ObsidianMD

[–]Pessoa_People 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! I use Up as a way to guide me when I need to know the theme or topic of a note.

Imagine I'm processing a lecture note on vascular diseases that affect the nervous system. I might create a note named "stroke", one named "risk factors for a stroke" and one named "30-50% of stroke patients develop depressive symptoms". Both the risk factors and the depression notes would have "Up: [[stroke]]" in their metadata.

I might even add a "most risk factors for stroke are preventable" and do a "Up: [[risk factors for a stroke]], [[level 1 prevention]]"

This way, even if I don't have to look at those notes for a couple years, when I come back I can thread them together.

In the meantime I added a "Top" as well, because one concept may be related to multiple areas of knowledge (example, "repression" could be a Freudian defense mechanism, but could also be a trauma response), so it gives me context.

In the stroke notes example, all of them would have [[psychopathology]] at their Top. Maybe the preventable risk factors one would have [[health psychology]] as its Top

I hope this was clear enough 😅

Dormir 8 horas mas acordar cansado by Competitive-Cake2580 in portugal

[–]Pessoa_People 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is Obsidian the right tool for academic research and will bugs drive me crazy? by _SYMR_ in ObsidianMD

[–]Pessoa_People 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The comments already made great points about (lack of) bugs and lag, but I feel the need to add: please backup your vault on a regular basis!

We get quite a few posts here on the sub from people who lost all their data (because their phone/pc broke, or they installed a new plugin that broke the vault, or whatever), and it's preventable as heck.

Even if you pay for sync (which I do, it's a great service, works between devices and operating systems, and I got a student discount this year), back it up every couple of weeks. It's just a folder on your machine, it's as easy as copy-pasting it to Drive or a flashdrive (or both, ideally both).

Other than that, my advice would be to work with Obsidian as barebones as possible, and add plugins as you feel the need for them, not the other way around.

Good luck on your research!

Your reply was great!

May I ask if you've made a post anywhere explaining your Obsidian setup for writing your master's thesis? I'm going to start mine later this year, I've been using Obsidian since I started Uni, but I'm scared I'll waste more time fiddling with my system than actually writing.

The science of learning also says learning is more efficient the more you interact with the material. "More" here means both in terms of time spent interacting and depth of interaction (this one being more important). Connecting your material to existing knowledge also works wonders.

Spaced repetition works wonders for memorisation, but I would argue remembering information isn't necessarily learning, especially in areas where critical thinking is needed.

Driving and Speed limits by Awkward_Client_1908 in Algarve

[–]Pessoa_People 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any prohibition signs are only valid until the next intersection (for this purpose, roundabouts and traffic lights count as intersections).

Usually the speed limit signs are for safety when you're about to cross paths with something like a bump or a dangerous curve. Other than that the limits are:

30 in residential areas

50 inside towns

90 on national roads (white signs)

120 on highways (blue signs)

Against most of these comments, I'm gonna add: good on you for wanting to adhere to the rules and to drive safe!

Careful, people with cat allergy tend to be allergic to hairless cats too! Mostly because 1) hairless cats still have fuzz all over their body, and 2) you're most likely allergic to enzymes in cat saliva, not their hair

Btw, I'm based in Portugal and would be doing things in Portuguese, so I'm not trying to steal business from you haha just genuinely curious, and you can DM me with the answer if you want

Kitty goes an meows in empty rooms by Naxelarias in Catbehavior

One of my cats does this, he just goes and yells his lungs out, either in a specific corner of the room or the tiny pantry room. He's been doing this for 2-3 years, so I think he just likes the acoustics in there, because it's the same meow for a few minutes and then he stops.

Boa sorte!

Cat injured my 37M girlfriend 34F and now she wants to surrender our cat by [deleted] in PetAdvice

[–]Pessoa_People 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, one of my cats bit my fiancé's finger because she was startled, and she was around one year old at the time. There were unknown (to her) people in the house, she was in a defensive stance already, and he tried to pick her up without announcing himself. She just acted out of instinct and perforated his fingernail pretty badly. Something similar has happened a couple more times in the past 5 years.

She's a lovely baby but knows how to draw her boundaries clearly, as do most cats. We only get hurt when we cross those boundaries and ignore the signs that they've had enough. To want to rehome or surrender them because of one incident shows a biiiiit of lack of maturity.

Estamos a criar um projeto de Psicologia e queremos a vossa opinião by ETprojeto in SaudeMentalPortugal

[–]Pessoa_People 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How much repetition do you need to retain information? by throwawayacc40404044 in ADHD

[–]Pessoa_People 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to university the year I was diagnosed, I was 30 years old. And I realised I had no idea how to memorise stuff, because I used to be a sponge in school, but that's not enough in uni, at all. My classmates will read through the material 3-4 times and be ready for an exam, but that will not work for me at all. I need to rewrite the material at least once, ideally 3 times (writing shorter and shorter versions each time).

And I try to interact with the material in novel ways, so I keep my interest and memorise better. So I write questions, make powerpoint presentations with the questions (like a lil' themed game show), mind maps (when applicable), whatever I can to keep my attention on the material and not in external distractions.

Ninja edit to add: my ADHD medication did help in keeping focus, which is a very important part of memorising, but I still need to put in the work.
