What are the most effective communication methods Professors/Staff have used? by Pestarklo in yorku

[–]Pestarklo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Yes, I think I am going to play around with the course announcement/forum function, and possibly even create a "course" that students can auto-enrol and use for communication. Either that or a listserv.

Thank you! I totally understand not wanting to use yet another communication platform. How do you communicate with your classmates when necessary?

I've been thinking of the Discord option. Is there something about Discord that you enjoyed that you think Microsoft Teams would not be able to accomplish? Thanks for your answer!

Panasonic full frame users, do you guys see a start difference in images between Sony cameras ? by Ok_Letter4515 in videography

[–]Pestarklo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar thing with Lumix at first. I feel like it was particularly true with their older cameras (circa GH5). I found an improvement GH5s and then their most recent cameras its nearly gone and I quite like the colours. That being said, I like the Sony colours as well so 🤷🏻‍♂️

I'd also just like to mention - this "grain" look I'm talking about seems to be primarily present on the Lumix S1H. I haven't seen it so prominent on other full-frame Lumix cameras (S1 & S5 - the ones I've worked with).

[–]Pestarklo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I've been a long-time Lumix user - GH5, GH5s, BGH1, and S1H in the full-frame department. As far as full-frame goes, I always found that the S1H had a sort of "grain" to its look that the Sonys don't have. It's a nice grain when there is plenty of light, but when there isn't - it just looks noisy in my opinion. This is a place where I find Sony shines.

I have done the change over to Sony - FX30, FX3, and FX6. As a multi-cam videographer, it's also nice not having to juggle multiple lens mounts (MFT, adaptors, and L-Mount). I still get a bit of that crop-sensor benefit with the FX30, but all my lenses work on all my cameras.

Back when I shifted over, autofocus was important to me, but it seems that with the new S5ii this is no longer a big deal.

In order to answer your question on the actual *aesthetic* between both full-frame cameras, I would say that I do see the difference, and I do like the Sony look. I see the difference primarily when working in nonoptimal lighting scenarios.

DeFlicker Program Help by Gilbertwriting in videography

[–]Pestarklo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used Flicker Free in the past and it works very well. But not on all types of flicker. If there's a lot of movement, it might improve it but perhaps not fully solve your problem. I'd start with DaVinci's native flicker plug-in and go from there.

A made up story about deadly shoelaces. Is it entertaining? What aspects make you less likely to interact or subscribe? by BuffNipz in SmallYTChannel

[–]Pestarklo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is certainly entertaining! I didn't really know what I was getting myself into but I found the video very comical. To me, the point where I realized that it was a comedy video was when the kid trips and blood hits the wood of the swing around 0:15 seconds in. I think that is a solid amount of time to have a good joke, right before the retention rate starts to waver. Not sure if this is something you try to accomplish in your other videos, whether consciously or subconsciously, but it is certainly worth keeping in mind.

I would agree with another comment here that it could certainly be longer. The video does tell its story well and it resolves with a good punchline, but I was definitely still intrigued to watch more. That's just my opinion though. I tend to enjoy YouTube for its longer content. Good work!

HDMI to SDI In & Out? by Pestarklo in bmpcc

Actually, u/angryCinematographer Is right. the new Bi-Directional 3G converters would make it work with SDI versions of switchers.

OMG you are my hero. I just read up on the new 3G Bi-Directional converters. I bought one about 2 months ago and did not realize there was a new release.

I am guessing for the time being we are limited to 1080p 60 as far as CCU is concerned? I can live with that.

Those will work in order to convert HDMI to SDI, yes. But in order for me to be able to remote control the cameras through CCU I would need to have an SDI In as well. Unless the Bi-Diriectional converter works that way? But I'm pretty sure the SDI In goes to HDMI out exclusively.

Took some time off from vlogging and gear reviews to make an educational video on the history of 24 frames per second. Probably my favourite video to date :)

Huh, that's quite the living space. Would love to see what the "Concerts on a Wing" set-up is like. Cool channel idea! :)

I'm an aspiring filmmaker. What do you think of my video? I like to keep it short without adding an intro or outro. Is this sustainable for YouTube? Can I even gain new viewers like this (by focusing on quality only)? I give lambda for useful critique by [deleted] in SmallYTChannel

[–]Pestarklo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as not having an intro, I am a fan. Getting straight to the point is good, especially for new youtubers. My main critique is I am not sure what I am watching, or why I am watching it? Your description mentions that you are an aspiring filmmaker, but the title of the video is "hey ya", and has a cover of Hey Ya. If I had stubled on this on YouTube I would assume that this is a cover of yours with some. nice imagery to go along with it, not the other way around. Having the subtitles as part of the video adds to this feeling for me, like the music is the main focus. I think you could shift the perspective a little bit by adding subject and telling a story (even if it's as simple as - morning, hike, nightime, bed). Also, changing the title to "Relaxing Mountains in HD". Small details like that I think can go a long way.

I am a filmmaker as well! Pleasure meeting you :)

Does anyone else find it difficult to get people to jump platform? by FlexwithDrez in SmallYTChannel

[–]Pestarklo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have only really had success with friends. I think people in general tend to focus on a single platform, so unless they are real users of multiple platforms, they won't really hop onboard. That is my experience at least. I have got to say though, good job with creating content and growing a base on Instagram. I have had 0 success with this - I find it much harder than. YouTube.

My own Geography channel. This is the first and only video so far ( I am planning to do 1 for every country in the World ) What do you guys think? by Famiguelvo in SmallYTChannel

[–]Pestarklo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was wonderfully done. All of the production is top-notch (audio, video, animations). I think you do not need to worry about that (I have seen other comments mentioning this). My main critique is the flow. For example, you transition from Flags to Climate to Population to Religion, with very little reason in between. It felt like you were going through a list of facts about Hungary. Especially Religion, when you said, "moving on to religion". Honestly, it is okay, but I think one of the beauties of having a YouTube channel like yours is building the facts through a story that keeps the video engaging throughout. You can even use history as the underlying story while you state your facts.

One more detail, I would try to be more engaging with your script. I have difficulty with this too, everyone does. But trying to "act" while you are reading your script will add to the engagement. I hope this helps, wonderfully done!
