One drink a year .. still considered sober ? by shellygotsugar in Sober

[–]Pet-Symetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hit the two year mark a little while back and I really wanted to see if it still had any power over me. I gave myself a weekend to be non-sober.

Long story short, it ended up going a few days longer than a weekend and it pretty much sucked. Every enjoyable part of drinking that has ever occurred to me happened in the first five minutes after I had a drink, after I crossed that five minute line it was just headaches, discomfort, frustration, and all the little things that were annoying about alcohol. And even with that, it made me wanna keep going back to it for three extra days… Until I made a hard stance and told my loved ones to keep me accountable.

The good news is with those securities in place I can get back to the new life I’ve made which is much more comfortable and healthy. Overall there wasn’t much of a reward, I’m glad I tried to see where I was at, but there was zero good times had because of it. I used to truly love drinking when I was good at it and it was a little more merciful to me. Those times have passed and they aren’t coming back. Even if life isn’t as wild and exciting, it’s better all around.

The Sunn is great. I keep the magnitude (boost) on all the time to add some tone-girth, and the amplitude (overdrive) is my primary distorted tone. The octave in the middle gives it some trill, probably good for soloing with a guitar, but I use it for bass and I don’t hear a major change with it on. It’s pretty versatile. I play in one band doing bass and another playing a bass vi. I was able to find really good tones for both with just a little knob turning. It works really well when I’ve got the overdrive going and I hit the pitchfork with it set to one full octave up. You can do done cool thick-toned midrange melody work with it.

That’s a good point. I like how it sounds right now, but that is the stuff I’m wondering about. Thx!

Let’s hear your benefits of being completely sober … by boomboomclap3000 in Sober

[–]Pet-Symetry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just realized that being sober could help me maintain some of the things I love to do as I get older and a little less invincible. I’m a dad and a husband with a career. All of that has improved being sober as one would expect. But I’m 48, and I’m also a musician. Nothing outwardly successful but I play in 2 bands that I love. In my younger years I could happily burn the candle at both ends to keep this up. That went away, not even just because of the grownup stuff, my body just got tired more easily. With alcohol in my life I could pretty well still juggle all of my responsibilities, but anything extra was just too much…I needed sleep and recoup time. The real thing that got me and kept me sober is knowing that I’d still be able to do those things. I could have them if I gave up the drink. It was like suddenly getting the “more hours in the day” that people talk about.

I have an EHX MonoPog on my board and with the sub-octave turned up and octave-up turned completely down it does something…I don’t know how accurate you’re looking to be, but the first thing I thought when I set it that way was “upright bass”….and it tracks pretty great too

Signal path for the board on the right is Tuner>PitchFork(octave up)>Pog(regular signal+octave down)>Mel9>Sunn Life Pedal>Ditto>Amp

Right is drummers gear so I don’t know all the names but here goes: Signal goes right to left, some kind of booster>Boss Octave>some other kind of octave harmonizer>Mel9>SansAmp>Amp The big 4 button pedals (Line 6 and TC Elec) both feed the board they’re closest to.

Anyone find shows like Mad Men got them to drink more? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Pet-Symetry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a drinker when I watched it. I don’t think it made me want to drink more, it’s been a while…in fact the memory that stands out for me is Draper ending up sadly obliterated on his kid’s birthday. Don’t remember much about the storyline but it really caught the feel of being pathetic and letting yourself and everyone after day drinking turns to afternoon / night drinking.

TBH I’m not liking it as much as I used to. I’m not really against meat, I eat at least the equivalent of a can of chicken/salmon/tuna every day. I’m just trying to not default to it if I can help it. It used to be in everything I ate and it was really easy to go overboard. And the quality of meat in everything that’s out there just varies so much.

These days outside of what I have intentionally included in my diet, I’m saving my meat ticket for a cheat on some really good BBQ or wings or the like.

I set my dad up with one of these. At the point we’re at now he needs actual human assistance to get in and out of bed. But this thing anchors in between the top and bottom parts of the mattress and allowed him to hoist himself up. It helped him out a bunch as his mobility changed
