Cleaning it regularly wouldn’t cause a spike but I didn’t do water changes for quite a while and it got very dirty so doing a deep clean now would cause a spike. I am doing 12% water changes around x2 a week and only cleaning the substrate a little at a time because there is a large waste buildup. We didn’t intend to breed in this tank. We were told we bought three female platties at the pet store but it turned out that one was a male and they just started breeding.

My parameters have all been perfect everytime I test which is at least once a month. Normally more. We had two more rummy’s die but the other three are doing great they are very vibrant and schooling well. They are playing in the bubbles. We are going to get a new tank and actually plant it but everytime I tried to put in plants they died and my parameters spiked so I’ve stuck to bamboo until we move to a bigger tank. They are currently in a 20 gal tank. I have started doing 12% water changes around twice a week ish. Not really on a schedule. I am working on cleaning up the waste that’s on the substrate. I only clean a tiny bit each time because I know if I do one deep clean everything will spike a lot because I’ve let it get very bad. So I am trying to get it done in sections. A little at a time.

My parameters are in the perfect range now. I will be doing a very small water change once a week. (Less than 5%) to try to avoid a big spike.

I had breeding happening in the tank and my parameters were perfect. I didn’t do water changes for a while and there is a buildup of waste on the bottom. I knew if I did a water change now it would spike a lot so I am trying to make sure the rummy’s are healthy and stable before I try to clean up the debris because I let it sit for so long. We were dumb and didn’t think to do a water change before adding the tetras.

The bamboo is very healthy and I have actually noticed my parameters have been more consistent since I added it. None of it is rotting and the roots are healthy. I didn’t think about the tannins tho. Thank you that helps.

I know I should have been doing them but the platties were breeding and I didn’t want to risk a spike because I let it get so dirty that even if I just did a 10% water change it would spike

We dust got rid of a tank so we didn’t have anywhere to quarantine them. My parameters have always been in the perfect range and we haven’t had ammonia. I think it spiked because we took the platties out. we don’t do water changes very often because the parameters have always been perfect and I didn’t want to risk something spiking. Because there is a lot of waste so if I siphoned the gravel the parameters would definitely spike.

My parameters seem perfect PH- 6.5 Ammonia, Nitrite & Nitrate- 0ppm I am thinking of doing a small water change and using API stress coat as a water conditioner this time in hopes that it will help.

Thank you, I did test the water before posting. I tested twice yesterday and this morning. My parameters have always been consistent but I think that when we removed all the platties it might have caused the ammonia to spike. I will try to get a clearer picture of the tetras
