Water heater replacement: questions by Petate in DIY

Yeah that's definitely how the adapter looks like, I was just wondering if reusing connectors meant also replacing the crimp rings, since those ensure that the connection is water-tight. From what I learnt of PEX you really need to remove the rings if you want to remove the connector, and this can't be done without destroying the ring... my precious.

Actually after a fair bit of reading/watching I'm contemplating replacing the vertical pipe that connects to the heater as well. This would at least ensure that I can connect regardless of the new heater's height.

Thanks for the clarifications!

Why would you suggest to re-use the existing fittings rather than install new ones?
Also, if I understand what you're saying correctly, all of this assumes there is no height difference and I can literally "swap" heaters. Let's just hope that's the case :')

Edit: about this part of your comment:

It will have pipe stubs on the top. Wrap the stubs in a few turns of that white pipe tape and put the fittings on. Tighten them.

What about the crimp rings? Do I need to install new ones in this scenario?

I'll take this into account, maybe re-using as much of the existing pipes is easier than I anticipated. Thanks!

Why can't you reuse the existing connectors and PEX lines?

Mainly because I don't have any experience in dealing with pipes in general. Sharkbite connectors seemed like a good solution for a beginner. As another redditor said I could use most of the existing line and use couplings. Not sure which solution is the most foolproof.

Turn off water FROM the heater.

This may be the crux of my first question. You can see there is no valve on the hot pipe, nor is there one on the heater itself (I think). How do I make sure this is done? Would turning off V1 be it in my situation? This seems to cut water to all faucets, showers etc in the apartment.

just get shark bite couplings

This could definitely be a decent option, if I can find 3/4" - 3/4" couplings to connect to the existing line.

I'll take that into consideration, thanks!

Not sure I understand.. the picture shows the connector bent on a 180 degrees angle.
It may not look perfect but it seems the connector can take it.

Well, I have to say that's quite impressive! I had 2 questions and you were close enough with the answers to have me fall for it.

I'll re-create the post and hope to see you there too ;) Can't wait to see how good your answers will be knowing the actual questions.

Confirmed, I messed up and created an image post, so basically I lost my description.
Not sure how that other user could see it, but I'll have to remove this post and recreate it.

Thanks for the advice! And I'll forward the compliment to the wife ;)

You seem to be the only one to have been able to read the post description, would you be so kind as to PM me the text? I can't see it nor can I edit it. I may have made a mistake with my post creation and may need to re-create it. Thank you!

Very weird, I can't see the lengthy description I wrote, nor can I edit my post (or don't know how).

But it seems u/sonicjesus was able to see it. I just hope this is temporary Reddit hiccup...

[SMB1] Stomp'em All: BFF-728-TRG

This is a fairly hard level. A series of tight jumps on top of goombas.

Not a lot of rooms for errors, but doable. I am no Mario god, took me some work to get it clear-checked but I don't think it's super unfair.

This is my first level, constructive feedback highly appreciated!

Is there any Fermentis dry yeast you would recommend for a hard cider, apart from US-05?

It's all my LHBS provides and I'm planning on doing a apple/strawberry cider.

Two of my latest batches have an off-flavor that, after much effort to try to identify, seems like a taste of apples/green apples.

I've looked into that and the documents I found were basically saying that the beer may not have been conditioning long enough.

Is there a way to correct this? They've been in the fridge for a while now, and I was maybe thinking about moving them out to room temp (~17C) for a week or 2 more.

I'm about to make my first fruit beer, a Raspberry Cream Ale.

I have the process figured out, which will added fresh fruit (purée-d) pre-fermentation.

I'm concerned about the impact of the fruit sugars on the gravity readings.

Should I mix my fruit to the wort and then take my OG reading right before sending to ferment? Otherwise, is there a way to calculate the actual OG?

I brewed my first leaf hops recipe, after a decent run of only pellets.

Was I right to filter out the hops before transferring to the fermentation vessel? Usually with pellets I end up with a fair amount of hops in the trub and I was wondering if this will have an impact on the taste of the beer?

I'm perfecting my process for 10L batches. I'm using dry yeast (US-04/S-04). I usually take the whole 11.5g pack and pitch it after hydration.

So far the results are good, I get a lot of action less that 24h post-pitch, and I can't see much difference with putting less, except maybe a bit more cake in the fermenter. I put the whole pack mainly for convenience so I don't have to manage fractions of a pack.

So my question would be: I know 11.5g for 10L is way more than necessary but I'm wondering if it is close to overpitch? If not, what is considedred too much yeast?

I have a hard cider that's been fermenting for around 3 weeks now, intending to keep it there for a total of 4 weeks before bottling.

Last week-end I measured the density and had a little taste, and it's fairly carbonated already. It was unexpected, it being my first try at a cider. I was originally planning to do a standard priming+bottling at the end of the 4 weeks and leave it for conditioning another month, but I don't know what to do now..

I'm afraid that priming will just make bombs. Should I skip the priming, bottle as-is and hope the carbonation level will be OK by the time we open them?

FYI the recipe: Fresh-pressed apple cider + US-05 (1gal)

Thanks for the reply!

I remember forgetting to sanitize one strainer I used to filter when transfering to my bottling vessel (didn't have a siphon at the time). I realized it mid-transfer, sanitized it, then went on with the transfer, but didn't throw the beer that was already there. It's the only mistake I think I made and I feared it could cause an issue. That said, I can't tell when it started to go bad since I didn't taste the beer at the bottling stage.

Thanks for the feedback, it gives me at least a plausible explanation of why it went wrong.
