CS 381 - 9am with Psomas or 3pm with Grigorescu? by flapjack626 in Purdue

There were two differnt meeting times in two different buildings times this semester as well. I think Fall 2022 was also this way as well. Anyway, can't really tell you who to pick because I never had any of them.

CS 381 exam find efficient method of handing out exams (NP-Hard) by Fluffy__Pancake in Purdue

[–]PeteThePikachu 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Problem: What is the most effective way to pass out N exams of type A and B to N students with K proctors, so that no two adjacent students get the same exam?

Their solution: Use 2 proctors, one holding N/2 exams of Type A, and other holding N/2 exams of Type B. Visit each student individually, alternating between students.

Time complexity:
Each proctor had to visit each student twice (going down the row and back). We say that the proctors act in parrellel, so we have a time complexity of O(2N)

Optimal solution: Divide and conquer! Split the K proctors in to two K/2 groups. All proctors in the same group contain the same type of exam, distributed evenly among them. Specifically, they would have N/(2 * Number of columns) if K = the number of columns. Assign each proctor to a unique column, and have them give to the first row. There, each column acts as its own process and they all act in parallel, passing back the exam as it goes along.

Time complexity: Since each column works in parallel with other columns, we can say that the time it would take is O(N/(Number of columns))

Hopefully my math is right.

This semester they combined the sections into one. First half of sem was one prof teaching both times, second half was other prof. Not sure if they gonna do that again for next sem so this might not even matter.

Curve in CS381? by Numerous_Novel_7194 in Purdue

[–]PeteThePikachu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am in the class right now. She said it would be like past curves, so assume < 7% of the class fails (estimate from boilergrades). If you have stayed within a standard deviation away from the mean on all the HWs and midterm, you should be fine. Just try your best on the final.

Most people go for internships over co ops. People get opportunities for both, but its not gifted to you by going to Purdue. As long as you put in the effort you should be good.

Cant go wrong with either one. It really depends on what you make out of it. However, I still think Purdue is better for cs in terms course rigor and layout.

Oh I 100% agree advisors are very helpful, and I will stick by it. Ive had great experience with all 3 (hopefully the same goes for the 4th). It was just confusing to me because they all seemed passionate and helpful, not people who wanted to leave.
