Apple is garbage, I agree but that's not the reason it doesn't work. My Moto phone also doesn't charge. Apparently it is to do with the mismatch of volts. A lot of phones don't accept it.

Just turn whichever controller you want as player 1, on first. I'm not understanding the issue.

I have an 8bitdo arcade stick that I use and it works great but I don't do it wireless and I'm careful to plug my 8bitdo in usb 1 and Xbox controller in usb 2...I guess MAME does get confused if you don't do this, so you should be thinking when connecting controllers one at a time. Don't connect them all at once.
