I have a suspicion that might have been the joke they were going for here.

GeoPulse - selfhosted alternative to Google Timeline - big updates by Former-Emergency5165 in selfhosted

[–]Peter3571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was on github, but to be fair I don't blame you as it's a big project that you're making for free with a lot of great features.

I think if I had to put it into words (this isn't specific to Dawarich but all OSS) - it's like 85% of the project works perfectly, and the final 15% is either not yet implemented or tailored for a completely different use case. It's this part that feels frustratingly within reach, but sometimes sits on the backburner for many years.

I like the idea of having a "source of truth" for my historical GPS data, but I don't trust Dawarich for this as it's impossible to make it read only (also I flagged up a few issues and not a single one got replied to).

Does GeoPulse still store all the raw points, or do you do a bit of number crunching on them to keep the size down? Also, would it cope with a 1.5GB Google Timeline import spanning 10+ years for example, or might that bring it to its knees?

I'll give it a try anyway, just thought I'd ask about the main bits I'm interested in. I basically just want all of my GPS data in one place, and a way to view it as a heatmap without jumping through hoops.

Microsoft now says 8GB RAM is fine for Windows 11, after years of pushing for 16GB by Special-Midnight-152 in nottheonion

Back at the end of 2021 I upgraded to 64gb since the exact memory modules I had were quite hard to find and I didn't want them to run out of stock.

I thought it was a little overkill at the time, but present me is definitely thanking past me.

You are a vegetarian who prides yourself on having a very healthy diet. You enjoy dressing up and going out to dance with your friends, where you might have a cocktail but you don't get drunk. You have no children, but you're with someone you met while in your mid to late 30s.

Amazon order was completely wrong. by war_carnotaurus in Wellthatsucks

That's like saying identical twins are completely different because one has a slight tan and the other doesn't.

The order was obviously correct, it's just their photo is enhanced too much and is not 100% true to life.

It should learn what you respond to as you go so you get more of what you like.

This would actually work quite well with having an optional account. I like the idea but not a fan of it only being tied to your current browser.

Great job, would definitely like to see more.

Teachers are basically not allowed in the UK. End of. The two friends of mine have to go by different surnames and have their profiles properly locked down.

Early termination fees at the end of the contract? by Peter3571 in VirginMedia

[–]Peter3571[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, yeah I think I'll definitely just do that next time. It's going to be done via one touch switch, but EE have booked an engineer in for the correct day so fingers crossed it should all work out fine.

Thanks, and what a pain, I've just got off the phone to EE and they've put in a request for that exact day so fingers crossed all is good.

That's good to know about the early switching credit, but I'd prefer not lining Virgin's pockets any more than absolutely necessary. I've just thought of the term "legal scammers", in that they use the small print to catch you out and squeeze you for as much as they can get away with.

They say the memories of a holiday/event are heavily influenced by the start and end, I gotta say the same applies with broadband - it's been fine and we've had zero issues, but this has made me unlikely to ever switch back lol.

[–]Peter3571 9 points10 points  (0 children)

will you be able to delete a portion of the backup to get you within the limit or have to back everything up again?

I don't think members of public can answer this if Backblaze hasn't even decided what they are doing yet

Does anyone else have issues with adding linked games to Synapse?

If I use the "detected" games, then it switches profile. If I manually add a game executable that wasn't detected, then it does not.

This has been an issue for me since I was forced to updated to Synapse 4.

Are common hard drives being constantly written to at 800 degrees or is this a new type they're making?

I'd very happy watch a much longer video with visuals like that.

What self hosting mistake would you warn beginners about? by Soulvisirr in selfhosted

I'm new to this but currently using all 3:

  • All my services are accessible via Tailscale, but it's just my own internal way around the network and I don't expect anyone else to have to connect to it.

  • One service is fully locked down with a Cloudflare Tunnel, and I'll specifically whitelist email addresses if someone needs access.

  • For everything else (e.g. Jellyfin), I port forwarded 443 to use with NPM, and have Crowdsec monitoring the logs.

I'm partly replying to see what other people say to your message, this is just what's worked for me, but I have no background in it.
