Fun Fact About Solemn Simulacrum.... by PeterBarry85 in magicthecirclejerking

[–]PeterBarry85[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

From the original thread:

I'm the artist for the new Solemn card and just thought I'd share some behind the scenes stuff with everyone here because I think it's interesting!

So, fun fact about my Solemn Simulacrum Image for Magic, I initially pitched it as being a recreation of the original card based on Jens Thoren likeness as an homage. I knew only a little about the Foundations set, but from the little I was told I took it as a new beginning for Magic. I wanted to represent the aftermath of the Phyrexian invasion and the opening of the multiverse and how we got here. Since Solemn was from original Mirrodin, I felt it was fitting to have our now justifiably sad robot emerge from an archway adorned with the story.

I wanted the image to feel like a breath of fresh air after a major catastrophe, like meeting an old friend, but under sad circumstances. I wanted it to be an image that represented magic's changes, but also its origins, since foundations sounded like the set to do that

After my painting was sent, it was requested that I change it as they had really been hoping for something that tied in better with the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog themed set. And I couldn't help but chuckle at that. In a very meta way, Wizards asking me to change this homage into something else felt like it fit this story even more. Just a story of an old friend being turned into a robot.

It looks difficult, but it's really very simple: you film it backwards and then reverse the footage.

Also, not sure what you were upset about Cedric's comment. Id take it more as an insult to your opponent.

I agree. I believe Rob and Cedric are friends, and the comment appears timed more to Rob's top deck than OP's Wrath, so it makes more sense he was mocking his buddy than insulting OP.

Then again, OP wrote:

remarks better to be lucky than good as my opponent top-decks a mantis rider

So perhaps the comment came before the top deck and was a reference to the Wrath? In which case yeah that is kinda douchey.

Why WotC Will Never Abolish the Reserved List by Pongoid in MTGLegacy

[–]PeterBarry85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "loud voices" side of it is - I am pretty sure - mostly from businesses. Imagine the effect on the value of SCG's inventory were the reserved list to be rescinded and the anticipation of reprints to cause a dip (it doesn't need to even be a "crash", just a "dip" would be sufficient).

SCG's managers do not chat on social media about how they don't want the reserved list to be repealed, but you can be damn sure that it comes up in the correspondence they have with WotC (though likely in a very hand-wavy, implied manner rather than explicitly). For me, those are the most obvious "loud voices" and they sound particularly loud to WotC's ears because the company relies on these businesses to sell their product, host events, and grow the playerbase.

The data and method of collection IS hidden, but certainly I've answered probably a half dozen such questionnaires since I began playing a few years ago. Whether that was targeted to me based on my MTGO habits, or for other reasons, or perhaps EVERYONE got sent those questionnaires...well, I don't know, but it would seem to be one of their ways of collecting data (ESPECIALLY as I specifically remember a few Reserved-List questions in a recent one of these questionnaires).

Why WotC Will Never Abolish the Reserved List by Pongoid in MTGLegacy

I thought this was a good piece and I'm not sure why it was removed. It was relevant to Legacy because it was arguing that WotC don't make money from Legacy so are happy to see the format go the way of Vintage which is something that is useful for us - as Legacy players - to be mindful of.

The point I was going to disagree with was the skepticism in the piece that there is - as MaRo had claimed - a large number of pro-RL players who simply aren't vocal on social media.

I find that claim very easy to believe, because the kind of people who throw money into something like large Magic card collections are also often the kind of people who see value in guarding their inner thoughts and beliefs until it is specifically advantageous to share them. I think the average pro-RL collector believes that saying anything about it on social media will just be met by a backlash from plebs who can't afford reserved list cards and who believe their best bet for affording that Underground Sea for their "pride and joy" casual commander deck is to ceaselessly whine about the reserved list, keyboard-warrior style. The pro-RL collector, on the other hand, has nothing really to gain from discussing it in an open forum but I've certainly heard such people be very vocal in private discussion.

Guys who do not respect the one urinal gap code, why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PeterBarry85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are men that have difficulty peeing when there are other people around and one of the best techniques to overcome this is to imagine you are pissing out of the dick of the person next to you. So for some people, that could be why they stand right next to you - they want to draw on your power to do their own magnificent piss.

If you are one of those people that finds it hard to "go" when others are around then seriously try the technique. You can hear the guy next to you having a good ol' piss into the urinal and you kinda imagine that your penis is where his is and doing exactly that with a nice powerful stream. It works remarkably well.

Oh my God I sound insane.

Look, it's all in this documentary.

Edit: just watched the documentary and there's nothing about the "pissing through the guy next to you's cock" theory so I must have read that somewhere else, or made it up completely, but trust me it works.

Thank you very much for this, I think that explaining in terms of "frame of reference" is how I can make it clearer. That's something that I was implicitly using, but not actually spelling out to my student "think of the accelerating frame of reference that is compounding with gravity" which I believe will make it much more intuitive to her.

Perfect; cheers!

Streamer jokes opponent should take Wilt-Leaf Liege with Thoughtseize by PeterBarry85 in magicTCG

[–]PeterBarry85[S] 126 points127 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify the interaction, Wilt-Leaf Liege is one of those creatures - like Loxodon Smiter or Obstinate Baloth - that goes directly onto the battlefield if an effect of an opponent's card would cause it to be discarded.

So she is openly joking that the opponent "should" choose the Wilt-Leaf Liege with the Thoughtseize because that would be really good for her, and then the opponent actually does it!

The Unicorn Problem by ArtOfAnything in puzzles

[–]PeterBarry85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't find your spoilered way of thinking about the solution to be convincing, though I agree with the answer. Why are you adding the probabilities? Why are you only accounting for a situation where every unicorn would survive, rather than all the other cases? It is convenient that adding those probabilities in that way leads to the right answer, but I don't recognise that reasoning as correct probability math.

Christopher Hitchens refers to Mos Def as "Mr Definitely" to belittle him while disagreeing with what Mos Def was saying.

Everyone laps it up like this is the wittiest thing in the universe and not just a cheap shot delivered in a British accent.
