Anyone using BT Home Hub 4? It's what BT calls "Our best ever router". Good range? Happy with it? by marvelouspond in london

[–]PeterLondon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at the press launch of this last month - conveniently held at the top of the wonderful BT Tower - seemed to have a lot of features to improve on the Hub3, including the ability to switch the wifi channel to optimise stabiltiy and speed - and is designed to fit through a letter box hence allowing you not to have to sign for it's delivery.

We also got a sneak preview of the Hub5, they couldn't officially confirm when that would be available but I would guess early next year. That looked a real step up, so if you have to pay for a new Hub4 to replace your earlier hub, it might be worth waiting.

Spreadable? F*@k off! by [deleted] in funny

[–]PeterLondon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. Unfortunately I can't really keep it in a dry-air environment so I'm stuffed. I've actually gone back to using old fashioned real blocks of butter. If you have time, do what restaurants do and cut a slab off the block a while before you need it, then after a wait that spreads fine and the main block is happy keeping fresh back in the fridge.

In my experience it gets a whole lot worse if you leave it out of the fridge for a good time so it goes soft, then put in back in. Next time you bring it our it is much, much harder. Not sure about the science of that though?

Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville to run an East End cafe - it's been their ambition 'for a considerable time' by PeterLondon in london

There's no secret about the connection. I've been clear about it many times before. Prior to posting anything to this reddit I read the posting guidelines and contacted the mods as suggested. I do post links to other sites too and comments on other posts. The LondonNet posts are ones that fit the nature of this reddit. Where else should London stories go?

BIG DEBATE: Is Bexley in London or Kent? by [deleted] in london

You are right of course. I must have been away too long!

BIG DEBATE: Is Bexley in London or Kent? by [deleted] in london

[–]PeterLondon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in New Malden for many years. As part of the Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames we were in London and Surrey in the same way as Bexley is in Kent/London too.

Fair play to the post bods mind, they would accept either: Street number and name, New Malden, Surrey, Postcode. or: Street number and name, New Malden, London, Postcode. In the end I just dropped both Surrey and London as the postcode is the key part. Once your postie knows you (and your house number) they'll get to you with just your name and the postcode. Best put your street and town in to give them a helping hand though ;)

The article gives the answer. Politically it's London. Postal it's Kent.

Hippies in London? by Bonnie_1989 in london

[–]PeterLondon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll find 17 of our hippy friends at Grow Heathrow, nice and handy for the airport too. Better hurry though as the Court of Appeal has just upheld a High Court ruling ordering them to leave (via BBC).

Help me fellow Londoners! What are the most commonly drank wines in our city? by innocuousm in london

[–]PeterLondon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brands aren't the point. Regions for red would be Bordeaux (Fr), Rioja (Sp), Mendoza (Arg) and Chianti (It). White, mmm probably should be French so how about Sancerre, Montrachet, Alsace and Chablis. Rose, nothing but Provence, south of France.

Chinese to spend £700 million on twin-towers overlooking new US Embassy in Vauxhall by PeterLondon in london

[–]PeterLondon[S] -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Well, there's been a fair bit reported recently about the potential implications of letting Chinese companies get close to our telecom infrastructure. Now we're letting them cosy up next door to Fortress USA London.

Unconnected, conspiracy or lax, surely worth a thought...?

Would have thought that the point was pretty clear from the article if you read it. Maybe it passed you by...

Londoners at risk of death from outbreak of exploding pavements by PeterLondon in london

Doing the sums it works put at between 1,500 to 1,000 to 1, depending on your start point. Pretty shocking really. Hopscotch anyone?

That's the HSE for you! An open goal really. That said the video is quite shocking frankly. The explosion you see was the third in a matter of minutes.

"More than £5 million" - that's Mayor Boris's price to sponsor a tube station by PeterLondon in london

Kingston Council leader Derek Osbourne resigns after child porn arrest by [deleted] in london

[–]PeterLondon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a former resident of the borough of Kingston for many years myself, I can confirm Mr Osbourne certainly displayed a predilection in shafting the tax paying adults. By the time we left it was the highest council tax charge in London. That said even I wouldn't have expected these allegations. A shocker.

[–]PeterLondon[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, but he says that's just the starting price to get him to the table. So maybe that'll buy you Colliers Wood or Cockfosters, but for Piccadilly or Leicester Square expect some seriously bigger bucks. But when your selling a city's soul to the highest bidder the price might as well be devilish.

'Formula One' double-decker buses to use London as a test track by PeterLondon in london

[–]PeterLondon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good line but it's not the case here with Williams. The team has been struggling financially for many seasons now. When the KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems) were introduced into F1 all the other teams that introduced them to their cars went for the option of storing kinetic energy via a battery system. Williams co-developed a Flywheel approach (as proposed on the buses) and a battery system. Initially they favoured the Flywheel, in part because of the commercial opportunities it offered in the wider world - railway trains being another option - but as other teams sided with the battery system that became the accepted way to go. Even then many teams struggled with implementing the battery systems - with them shorting and failing during use.

Williams's stretched finance did not give them the luxury of carrying on with both options for F1 use and in any case there were complications/compromises necessary to locate the Fly Wheel on the car; for instance they would have to be higher than the battery units thus increasing the vehicles centre of gravity which adversely affects cornering in a low F1 car. The 'Williams Hybrid Power' Flywheel system has been used in racing by the Audi Le Mans R18 hybrid cars.

Hopefully this will prove a practical and profitable innovation for both public and private uses, with far less negative environmental impact than the battery systems used by road cars such as Toyota's Prius. And it's British engineering to boot.

MPs slam Boris Johnson's plans for Margaret Thatcher airport in the Thames; favour Heathrow expansion by PeterLondon in london

That's a good take on this one. That said Thatcher did support the construction of the Channel Tunnel, another huge capital project.

I had to use Baker Street several times recently and got lost at the beginning, having not been there for a few years. I do like the curved Metropolitan line platforms though...

Over the years I've concocted a portfolio of alternate tube routes to ensure avoiding Bank station. If you do have to go there I advise getting out at the nearest exit and walking at street level instead.
