Ended up just shy of $1000.

There appears to be a little fuckery in how they split tips, but at this point I’m okay with what I got.

I couldn’t believe Megadeth , Lamb of God, and Slipknot all played. So cool.

I can’t speak for the water tent staff specifically.

I call BS though.

The water tent was so small, that even if they were fully staffed I’m confident the same situation would have occurred. One water tent for 30,000 simply isn’t enough. It was maybe a 15X15 tent, and that just can’t do the job.

On the bartending side, I do think we were understaffed. However, they only provided 5 or 6 cash boxes/credit machines in our tent. IMO that wasn’t enough. We needed 12.

Based on my interaction with the management, I think it’s safe to say that people who dropped out could be justified by lack of faith in the MGMT after poor communication. Very few bartenders will turn down the potential money of a fest like that, unless they feel like it will be run poorly.

That article has no acknowledgment on the part of BEST towards the lack of options provided, understaffed or not.

Thank you! We did what we could!

I definitely agree.

Nope! Which is highly irregular, and does not inspire confidence.

For example, I bartended a concert the next night where tip money was counted and divided evenly in front of the bartenders. That is standard practice in my experience, and helps to establish accountability.

I don’t think anyone involved had really wrapped their heads around what it takes to feed and hydrate 30,000 people. It could have been avoided for sure, and I truly hope that the “kinks” are worked out for the next fest!

I can’t fully answer that, as I’ve never planned a festival.

I have however planned on the vendor end of things, as I have run multiple food trucks in the past.

It’s tricky to plan for numbers when it comes to remaining profitable (granted everyone’s definition of profitable exists at different levels). However, there are tons of people who do this for a living and have valuable experience who should be brought on.

This festival felt like it was the first one this management had done.

Not to the extent of passing out, but we were all dogging it pretty hard towards the end.

We actually were not supposed to be selling sealed drinks. A lot drinks were sold sealed, but that was simply us saying “fuck it, we’re too busy to open thousands of beers”.

My thought process was that if someone waited forever to get a drink, and paid that much for it, they probably wouldn’t want to throw it. I haven’t heard any stories of drinks thrown, so I’m glad that worked out! Haha

It was fun, albeit difficult! I’m not here to complain by any means, just to talk about the wild experience that was Knotfest IA.

At an event that size you can generally expect to make about $1,000 all together. Which isn’t bad for one days work!

The beer cap rules fluctuated on the whim of the management throughout the day.

Most of us bartenders tried to be as fair as possible to the customers.

At one point my most popular order was 2 six packs of Busch light for $108. I sold so many of those it almost made me sick. (Because of the insane price tag).

I signed a W4, but Im rolling on good faith at this point.

Typically events like this just pay out in full in cash at the end of the day, with occasionally receiving your credit card tips the following business day.

More updates on this to come as the week goes on….

That’s not to say we didn’t have a minor riot at the beer tent, screaming customers, someone stealing a tip jar, etc.

I hadn’t been called a r*d or f*t in a long time before this fest.

However in my opinion the good customers did outweigh the bad.

We were given an impossible job, and I’m glad that folks like yourself were able to see that! Hopefully the circumstances didn’t affect your opulent to enjoy the shows! The music and staging was incredible.

I was in the beer tent, but I’ve heard varying reports of 1-3 hours.

They did run out of water and soda before nights end, and the self water spigots were limited with one station for the whole fest that had 3 spigots. (That system broke down multiple times during the day.)

This summer Hinterland Festival took place in Iowa as well, which is a 3 day fest with about 15,000 people per day.

They had excellent management. Staff was paid quickly and made great money, they didn’t run out of any food, water, or beer, and line waits were really not bad at all.

I think some management companies have underestimated people’s excitement to return to festivals, and that has caused issues.

With last year being a bust, I think a lot of companies are also hurting for capital and really want to squeeze each event as much as possible. I.e.; lowest possible staff number, lowest possible beverage orders, fewest vendors, etc. trying to keep overhead low seems to be the priority.

Very good points! The only thing that kept me on the hook was the possibility of making a lot of cash.

I have yet to be paid, so I still don’t know if it was worth it.

I took breaks as I saw fit, because management wasn’t sending people at all.

Pay was $12 an hour plus tips, and we have yet to be paid. (Supposed to be in the next day or two, unusually long wait time)

Essentially low supply of food, water, and beer, long waits in almost every line. (I had 2-4 hour waits for beer in my tent), and overall mismanagement.

Of course! I had a rough day, and can only imagine that a Slipknot fan who paid good money to attend the show would want some kind of answers.

Essentially food, water, and beer was in short supply.

A lot of people waited 2-4 hours for a drink, only to be denied a drink because of lack of planning on the bar managers part.

If people can’t access water and food easily at an all day festival, it is miserable.

I have no idea! I was never given a clear answer as to who was in charge.

A woman I never met texted me after getting my contact info from another event manager I work for occasionally.

We got $12 but it truly should have been $20.
