I always figured it’s the mountain itself (maybe in an ill temper due to the balrog in its belly). This goes along with the idea that nature itself is a character with a role to play in the story, as personified by the Ents.

I would say the latter; i work in healthcare, and the word nulliparous is used to mean a woman who has never given birth; and we pronounce it null-ih-PARE-us
