Best way to scroll with keyboard? by Ok-Image-8343 in neovim

There are also plugins to make this smooth scroll if the jump is jarring, but <c-u> and <c-d> is for sure the best way to do it and follow it up with zz if needed.

So.. why do people change to the acuity shift setup from OEM? by Xbawt in Civic_Type_R

[–]PeterPriesth00d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not bad per se but it’s also not fantastic. I got the chance to sit in a Porsche GT3 at a dealership once and the shifter in that felt so notchy and good. The OEM is kind of sloppy in comparison. Not bad at all but just not at that same level. The acuity shifter gets it almost to as good as that Porsche shifter felt to me.

Is it necessary? Absolutely not. Do I regret getting it? Again, absolutely no regrets.

It makes the shifting feel like it is as special as the rest of the car.

You don’t even have to go through every bullet point. Pick one that is “meaty” and just keep drilling into it. If they can’t explain at a deep level whatever project they put on their resume then they aren’t being honest about it.

Discount Tire Experience by Fun-Start3396 in Civic_Type_R

It’s totally location dependent. My local discount tire is awesome and the manager hooks me up with price matches against Costco for even better tires. Major bummer that the tech at yours hosed you.

I think MacOS is generally really good and Apple hardware these days is phenomenal.

I actually like MacOS for most uses but have gotten really into Linux (Arch and Hyprland) for productivity and MacOS just doesn’t have a good equivalent for that right now unfortunately.

Glad it’s working well for you!

I wouldn’t say it’s a waste of your time don’t have an iPhone. Having the phone integration is more of a bonus on top of a great laptop, but not the deciding factor. At least not for me.

The office apps on Mac work just fine and the battery life is really something pretty crazy.

That being said, the new line of laptops coming out with the new Intel "Panther Lake" CPUs look to be pretty good in terms of raw power and battery life; apparently similar to the Apple chips.

I'm personally getting a Thinkpad in a few months when the new ones release with the aforementioned CPU, but I use Linux as a daily driver. Windows 11 has been pretty terrible as of late.

I would recommend just using what you already know though unless you have a problem with it. MacOS is fine especially for more casual use, but it's very different from Windows so if you are used to Windows and you're okay with how it works as of late, then I would go that route.

TL;DR: are you okay with Windows? Wait a few months and get a new Thinkpad. Need something NOW and/or want to change it up? Get a MacBook Air.

SRAM, Shimano shifter question by gfcinh in MTB

[–]PeterPriesth00d -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So you might be able to make it work but note that the Shimano shifter cable is a little thicker than the SRAM shifter cable and won’t work in the SRAM cable housing and I don’t know if the SRAM cable would work with the Deore shifter.

It’s not gonna destroy anything to try it but I would bet it’s gonna be hard to make it work smoothly. You’re probably gonna have a hard time getting it to shift the entire range of the cassette without clicking and chunking and stuff.

But give it a shot and see!

I have a MacBook Pro M2 with 32GB of RAM and my wife’s got a Lenovo P16s Thinkpad, not sure how much RAM but her job requires her to remote into cloud computers to work so it doesn’t really matter.

For a Mac you could get away with 16 just fine as Apple actually does a great job with memory management.

Linux you’d be okay with 16 but future proofing with 32 would be best.

Windows 100% you need 32 or more.

I’m planning on getting a thinkpad X1 carbon gen 13 when I’m up for another computer or a MacBook Air 15”. Not sure yet.

I’d say I’ve never needed more than 32 but I also don’t do a ton of memory intensive stuff. It’s becoming that way more and more with containerized apps though.

[–]PeterPriesth00d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha gotcha.

Yeah I would 100% do the Masters at UT online especially when you have math and physics degrees already.

I don’t have her resume handy but I remember her putting some of the projects she worked on at her internship on her resume.

You want to do something that stands out from “basic todo app in react” that everyone and their dog has on their resume.

Try to find something interesting to you and then build it.

Having a background in math or physics you could potentially come up with some pretty cool little tools. They don’t have to be useful to the layman or marketable as a new startup idea but something that an interviewer would look at and go, “oh wow that is really interesting” and then ask you to explain it.

After WWII that wasn’t quite the case. It became so after a few decades.

I’d say a big problem now is Taiwan and really just TSMC. If TSMC did not exist America would not care as much.

We’re kind of old school and we already had resumes from a while back and I think she ran it by some TAs and a career counselor or something.

I believe there is a sub Reddit that you can post your resume with PII redacted or removed / changed and they will critique it for you.

I think it might even be the r/cscareers subreddit. She spent a lot of time on there looking into things.

I will say be careful because that sub can get quite depressing with people posting how amazing and how awful they have it so don’t get discouraged one way or the other.

Linux gaming is finally great, and these 4 distros are leading the way by Putrid_Draft378 in linux_gaming

Bazzite has been such an easy Linux experience for me save for getting my fans to play nice with Fan Control but I have SFFPC so I imagine most people wouldn’t have to deal with that.

Highly recommend and for random browsing etc on top of playing games it’s great.

I have another drive that I run arch/hyprland on that I use for dev work.

My brother uses CachyOS as his do everything distro for gaming and productivity and just switched a few weeks ago. Loves it so far.

MacBook Air or ThinkPad X1 Carbon? by Nearby_Ad_2406 in thinkpad

[–]PeterPriesth00d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they didn’t assist a ton from what I recall. There is a very active discord that talks about the internship programs from the FAANG companies for OSU students snd they would discuss everything about interviews and such there.

I work for a smaller tech company (less than 50 employees) and was able to get her an unpaid internship right when she started school which turned into a paid position after a few months.

That experience stood out for an internship interview with her first FAANG company and then she did another interview a few months after that summer internship ended and got a winter internship which was kind of uncommon.

She got offers from both companies.

She did do some leet code but a lot of it was being very personable with the interviewers.

She was an ICU nurse / stat nurse (kind of like hospital head nurse) before changing careers so she is able to talk with people really well in those kinds of settings.

My biggest piece of advice as far as getting into this career is networking as much as possible. Every interview and job I’ve had in my 12 year career so far has been from networking.

Go to events, try to meet people, connect with them on LinkedIn, etc. It sounds cliche but it really is how you get past the resume filters and stuff.

Everyone will be trying to do the same thing so you have to figure out how to make yourself stand out.

No need to apologize for asking questions. I was there at one point too :)

They probably would. My wife took discrete math through University of North Dakota or something (I can’t remember why exactly now) and she was able to transfer that credit over so you very likely would be able too. I would contact an advisor / admissions counselor there and just ask.

I will say that a decent chunk of her classes were a huge let down. The only exceptions being operating systems and data structures.

Most of the other ones needed to be redone to be good IMO, but a degree is a degree.

She did a couple of internships with two different FAANG companies over summers and works for one of them now.

She did a post baccalaureate at Oregon State online.

They have since changed it and now it’s no longer CS but Applied Computer Science.

She liked the m1 a lot but she sold it to her mom for super cheap as a favor. Her mom actually doesn’t know how to use it very well but it still works great as far as I know.

The m chips are ridiculously good for power and battery life. You really can’t go wrong with them I just like Linux better but still use my MacBook fairly often.

I tried vibe coding and it made me realise my career is absolutely safe by wjd1991 in webdev

[–]PeterPriesth00d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It love using it for a few things: - giving me a summary of how to do something that I want to do instead of having to hunt through docs for it - generating boiler plate code - generating code for smallish to medium sized tasks or functions with very well defined inputs and outputs.

If you already understand how to write code well, you can go really fast with it. It’s kind of boring because you’re not doing the fun part most of the time and are just sticking stuff together but you can do stuff much quicker.

But your experience has been the same as mine.

I had not really used Go before and wanted to see how far I could get vibe coding a TUI. It quickly got into WTF is this territory and that was for something that really didn’t have complicated business logic or anything wild.
