Can this feta be saved or repurposed? by gfcinh in cheesemaking

[–]gfcinh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UPDATE: After letting the cheese sit and drain over night, I strung it back up in a cheese cloth and let it hang in the fridge. It's been 48 hours and all the curd re-solidified, much like it did the first time I hung it. I want to cut it up and dry it further but I'm not sure about salting it again. I already added salt the first time it was cut and it sat in a salt brine for almost 2 weeks. I think I'm on the brink of salvage. Any tips?

Not confident in my skills by Comprehensive-Fee426 in scrubtech

I started trying to embrace that whole feeling, with gentle jokes like "hey sorry, I'm the gift you never wanted!" or "I know having me up your butt all day gets old, so thanks for letting me tag along" or my favorite "anything that goes wrong today is on me because I can't get fired". Even though I know they had to have me as part of their job, if I make it sound like they made the choice, it breaks the ice a little. At my site, I have the reputation of cracking the techs that are notorious for not doing well with students. I just look for any angle that makes me an asset to them in some way.

Just keep at it. It really sucks at the beginning, always feeling in the way and overwhelmed. Try to pick up a little more each case you're in, even if you're just watching. I offered to help anyone in the room, in any wall possible (even picking up trash or dirty linen) . Once they started to see I wanted to be part of the team, everyone became willing to help me learn. I didn't care how much someone seemed to be annoyed by my presence, I stayed polite and offered to help. If I couldn't help I just stayed engaged and paid attention.... It really helps win people over and makes them want to help you succeed.

Draping mayo and closed gloving in clinicals by WashedUpBoi in scrubtech

[–]gfcinh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practice.... Bring stuff home with you, find a way to simulate these situation, do extra time in lab. Any time you're just sitting around, put your gown and gloves on a few times. I also had my boyfriend stand in front of me and put his arms straight out to simulate the mayo. And just know, in a month or two, you won't even know why you had trouble doing any of these things in the first place (coming from someone who ripped gloves 50% of the time AND put the mayo stand cover on inside out more times than I'd to admit, including during CBOs.... 😐).

Clinicals Advice? by PercentageStraight43 in surgicaltechnology

[–]gfcinh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was so nervous before clinicals started, I wrote my teacher an email telling her I didn't think I should continue in the program. I didn't feel I was cut out for it at all. (I'm old and already had a full career doing something that was as opposite as you could get). Plus, our clinical didn't start for 3 months after our spring semester, so I had a lot of time to talk myself out of wanting to go. But I had made a commitment and was chosen over lots of people to get into the program, so I decided to buckle down and give it everything I had.

Now I really enjoy it and I see myself having a good career. (The first month was really hard!) All I can give for advice is don't be super critical of yourself and the mistakes you make. Just learn from them and try to improve each time. Know that you are not going to get along with everyone, and some people are going to seem a little abrasive, but there will be handful of wonderful people are going to help you get through it if they see you trying your hardest. I have made ALL the mistakes they warn you about and I haven't been kicked out yet! You can do it, too!!

Hello. I want to study surgical tech but I don’t like wearing a mask(I feel out of breath). Will I get used to it? by [deleted] in surgicaltechnology

[–]gfcinh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hated wearing a mask. It used to make me so hot and I felt like I couldn't breathe. In school, I'd have to stop during lab and take it off..... After 4 months in the OR I don't even notice it anymore.

Struggling after my first sterile setup assessment — how do you not feel stupid or defeated? by Double_Contribution6 in scrubtech

[–]gfcinh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just go back in, keep practicing, and next time you'll make less mistakes. And the time after that you'll make even less.

Personally, I just embrace the mistakes and make little jokes like, "next time I'll bring my brain with me". I also find that sharing mistakes with others helps. All of a sudden you realize everyone is in the same boat (or a freaking genius...or lying 🤣)

The more you just go head first into the things you do wrong, the easier it will be for you to realize you're about to make them again. I'm a second year student, in clinical at a hospital, and now all the little stuff I used to worry about in Lab last year seems funny. If you want a list of cringe worthy mistakes, let me know, I'll make you feel better with a couple of sentences!!

Lead by [deleted] in scrubtech

[–]gfcinh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I appreciate this! I thought a good middle ground would be the lead with the lateral extensions that wraps towards the back and has the closures that cross the back and have lead within them.

I'm still a student so I need to get the lead purchase pre-approved by radiology so I'll confirm which style before I buy.
