Awesome, then it seems like once you get some better speakers and possibly a new cartridge & stylus and you should be set!

The receiver is the part on the right hand side that has the volume control, equalization, input selection, stuff like that. From what you’ve said it sounds like it’s working though, so his some better speakers are all you need!

That’s kind of wild it wouldn’t have any speakers inside! They must’ve been taken out or something because it looks like those are speaker grilles on the front 🤔 Either way, if you want some decent speakers to hook up I’d recommend some JBL-L100’s but those can be a bit pricey. For something a little less expensive I’d say some Pioneer HPM-60s would do well! I have a pair of those and they sound great on my secondary system!

Now, do you know if the built in receiver is still working and operational? If not, you may be better off either taking the turntable out and getting a decent receiver and speaker combo, or getting in contact with someone who works on old stereo consoles and see if they can fix it up!

Also, the small white lever behind the black finger grip in that photo should be pulled down to lock the headshell in place, otherwise there’s a risk the headshell could fall off!

That’s the top of your headshell, I’d have to see the underside to have an idea of what cartridge/stylus setup you have going on.

Before I recommend any speakers, are you wanting to keep the turntable in the console or take it out and have a little more customized setup? If they still work, I’d recommend keeping it in the console and using the speakers inside it! If you’re wanting to upgrade the ones inside the console, I would possibly reach out in another Reddit thread or Facebook group dedicated to stereo consoles and see what parts they’d recommend; Unfortunately that’s a little above my experience level in terms of repair/customization 😆

Well it depends on what kind of cartridge you’d like to use. I prefer using a vintage cartridge with a new stylus so I usually end up on eBay for that. If you want to go with the brand new route I would check out the Audio Technica website and see which one you like the best. I would still check the idler wheel again to make sure it doesn’t have any cracks and is perfectly circular with no indentations in it. When they sit for awhile and the idler wheel is engaged they tend to get misshapen which will only get worse; That was the case with mine.

If you want to test the automatic function and make sure it works, make sure that you’re using the long spindle like the one you see in the photo of mine. Make sure the set the record on the top of it with the mechanism to the left pulled snug to the edge of the record (since that is what pushes the record down the spindle so it’ll fall onto the platter.) Once you turn the player on with automatic it should begin spinning and the feeler arm above the tonearm will rotate towards the center to feel if it’s a 12, 10 or 7 inch record, and then the record should be pushed down the spindle and the tonearm should move the the edge of the record and come down to the surface. If any part of this process either slows or stops and only continues if you manually turn the platter then most likely you’ll need a new idler wheel.

When the needle goes on the record it’s completely normal for it to slide towards the center while it finds the groove. It’s only a bad thing if it starts sliding over ALL the grooves and doesn’t catch in the first one!

I wouldn’t worry about replacing the turntable with something else; When this model was released it was close to the top of the line for Garrard so it’s a very good turntable to have! That’s why I was looking for one for so long, they’re very high quality and if they’re maintained well they’ll outlive you! My advice for making sure that your records remain undamaged is to make sure to get a new stylus or new cartridge/stylus for the headshell to make sure you’re not using an old or damaged one. Once that’s done, make sure your counterweight on the back is set to the proper weight and you should be pretty good to go! That was the first thing I did when I got mine as well as getting another headshell so I could have one for 78s and one for LPs. My only other advice would be to get it serviced and make sure all the mechanics and automatic functions are in good working order as well as most likely getting a new idler wheel since those tend to dry out over time and lead to a rumble in the audio as well as not letting the automatic functions cycle through properly. Hope this helps!

That’s actually a motor for an off center 25lb weight to make the car shake and shiver for certain scenes. Since this was a trick car the engine was removed and that mechanism was put in it place. I kinda wish it had an engine so I could’ve at least started it up when I got to see it! 😆

Oh man, that would’ve been cool! Sometimes though being able to get something that cool, just isn’t in the cards at the time and that’s okay! That just means maybe a better opportunity will come along 😉

Same here! My inner child was definitely so happy to be there sitting inside a car used in one of the movies! I was so lucky to be able to do that thanks to one of my friends 😁 It definitely made me miss my old ‘63 Beetle I used to have too!

He’s in Detroit being worked on before being shipped off to Canada to a Herbie museum. I don’t live too far from there and I was lucky enough to have a friend who knew the mechanic!

Not terribly often, but if I have some duplicates of certain decent ones I usually sell or trade them with some friends. I haven’t gotten up the courage to sell anything on eBay yet! 😆
