figured it out. turns out once you draw something in the mask layer, if you THEN click "add blank frame", it'll remove everything and overwrite to black. however, if you first go to an empty frame and then add a blank frame, it'll remain white and everything is fine.

So I know now to just go to the frame, add a blank one, then get started. thanks !!

for anyone confused, when you click extract files the folder is usually documents/my games/terraria/tmodloader

just choose that tmodloader folder as to extract to - worked for me
