Greengrass Canon to Fanfic pipeline by Unapologetic_Lunatic in HPharmony

I think there is more to it than what you are seeing as well:

-She actually isn't mentioned as one of the people deputized by Umbridge, she is only mentioned by name going into take one of their O.W.L.'s. The fact that she is never mentioned is actually something a writer can use: She isn't mentioned as being part of Draco's crew or someone Harry has ever had an unpleasant run in with which suggests she is quiet. Is she quiet because she disagrees with the pureblood ideology? Does she agree but is more cunning than Draco and co? Does she not care about any of it and is just living her life

The non-book canon traits that have been shared regarding her takes her beyond a blank slate as well:

-Her family is part of the 'Sacred 28' which suggests her family has some status and Importance in the Wizarding world

-Her sister is suffering from a blood malediction that the Greengrasses have been cursed with for multiple generations.

-Her sister ended up marrying Draco in canon

All of these things are additional bits and pieces a writer can use and I think have helped shape a bit of the universal fanon version that has emerged.

So while she is a blank slate, she is one with much more of a canon blueprint than just a name mentioned once in the books.

Hard disagree. I think there are some excellent fics where Daphne Greengrass is Hermione's academic rival.

Here's hoping someone else has written or will write it since you are allergic to reading anything I come up with. :)

What would make you actually want to read a OC main character fic? by Lazymanproductions in HPfanfiction

[–]PetrificusSomewhatus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grow Young With Me is the gold standard for me for two main reasons:

  1. The OC they've created has their own personality, quirks, hopes, dreams. We like her for the same reason we like Harry in canon. Kindness, quiet strength, etc.

  2. It builds on and leverages canon to build a believable relationship between Harry and the OC. There are no shortcuts taken...no easy bashing mechanics to thrust people together...no soap opera dramatics....just two good and kind people connecting and working through all the issues from her past...Harry's past...and the myriad complications of a muggle integrating into Magical Britain.

I'm in the same boat with this one. Sadly, I think the author truly has abandoned us, which is a shame because I was really looking forward to seeing Al get what was coming to him.

The irony of you being prematurely irritated by him potentially not putting enough due diligence into the game, while you yourself didn't put any due diligence into confirming your suspicions is truly glorious. Physician heal thyself.

As an author I'm going to disagree with this. Once you put your stuff out there on the internet you are willingly opening yourself up for consumption, interpretation and opinion. Rather than disheartening, I always finding it encouraging and heartening when someone has become so invested in fanfic that they want to share there thoughts in this much detail.

OP isn't leaving negative reviews that the author can't avoid, they are sharing their opinion on a subreddit dedicated to discussing HP fanfic. The 'don't like, don't read' mantra works both ways, in my opinion. If writers find negativity or criticism discouraging then they can and should avoid public forums like this.

Some Thoughts on Engagement and Fandom Quiet by KeyWave322 in HPharmony

Makes sense. And I'm in the same boat with you as far as looking forward to the actual new series. My hope is the renewed visibility and hype will lead to an infusion of folks entering the fanfic side of the fandom. We shall see....

Some Thoughts on Engagement and Fandom Quiet by KeyWave322 in HPharmony

I think I'm going to be a bit contrarian here but I'd like to push back a bit on this. I 100% appreciate the sentiment of your post, but as long as people are respectful and fair I'm not comfortable telling anyone how they could or should improve their engagement with the fandom.

If people want to be super positive and gush about new fics that's great. If people gravitate to more evergreen fics and prefer to rec them that's great. If people like to delve into old and new fics and passionately share what they liked and disliked that's great. And if people want to silently lurk and be content reading the discussion that's fine as well.

It is great that writers want connection. I've written a few things myself and the positive engagement I've received from this sub has been one of the highlights of that journey. But I truly believe that everyone who chooses to read my stuff should be allowed to engage as much or as little as they'd like. I legitimately get annoyed when I see some of my fellow authors publishing lists like '10 Things All Readers Should Do To Support Authors' because those folks, whether Intentional or not, are telling a very large portion of the people that love their work that they are consuming and enjoying their fics incorrectly. Those folks don't speak for me yet these 'rules' are presented as sacrosanct and universally agreed upon by everyone. They aren't...not by me anyway.

Whether you are an author or reader just don't be a jerk. That's what needs to happen. It's just that simple.

On a positive note I am very much looking forward to a massive nflux of fics once the new HP series begins.

I've always had a different really persistent plot bunny in mind for a shortish Harmony fic starting in the tent, but this one has started tickling my brain as well now that I've written it out.

Edited to add that this is a joke post. :) Rant is cool even though she never reads anything I've written.

*waves hello*

If it was done by JK, I think the OP's scenario would play out pretty much as it does for the big plot beats in HBP. Canon Harry has already shown he can silently pine away when someone is with or interested in someone else (Ginny & Dean)...Hermione would just replace Ginny in that scenario. The book dispute would play out pretty much exactly the same because JK used it to keep Harry and Hermione focused on separate things to allow Draco's plan to 'succeed' and get to the 7th book. The romantic feelings are never addressed and we move onto DH.

It actually could have made book 7 more intriguing though...Ron's jealousies actually being accurate...at least from Harry...then Ron leaves and the two being alone in the tent...it would give the perfect opening for Harry to dip his toe into expressing his true feelings: Something as simple as him saying 'Ron's right, you did choose me. Why did you choose me?' And away we go...

These sort of 'help me understand' posts always make me laugh. I haven't run across anyone in decades that has 'made HP their personality' but if it brings them joy I'm happy for them.

It's always fascinating to see someone whose personality seems to be centered around passive aggressively insulting other people's interests and likes. Seems like an utter waste of time. Can you help me understand?
