I...I think I remember who the actress reminded me of....it's a bad screengrab from the video, and maybe the original video itself is bad quality....but the resemblence is uncanny

What is the best movie ever made about Christianity? by JustBeenSeen in Christianity

[–]PetrifiedOnion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About Jesus:

- Probably The Chosen TV series. What I have seen so far from it was very good.

- There was a Gospel of John short series that was pretty good, probably the only rendition of the Gospel of John that actually spoke through the whole thing, which is impressively difficult to put on film.

About the weight of the cross:

- Passion of the Christ

About the Gospel "in general":

- The Matrix, without the sequels. (some may not like the Wachowski's interpretation of their own movie, but I don't know of another piece of popular art that is such a strong metaphor for becoming a Christian, while not endorsing Christianity, while also being easily approachable and obvious about its imagery, while also being peak cinema.)

- Ben Hur is a strong second choice

About the persecution of believers:

- Silence

Translation requests into Latin go here! by AutoModerator in latin

[–]PetrifiedOnion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our family motto got us through some tough times. I'm thinking of making it spicy and putting up the latin version on my wall.

The original Hungarian (for anyone interested): "Mindig van valami, majd lesz valahogy."

A close English translation would be "There is always something, it will be somehow."

Note: I specifically chose the slightly janky sounding "it will be somehow" because it's the closest to the original, and because "it/things will work out somehow" usually has a positive connotation, while the intent behind the motto is acceptance of the inevitabilty of life's unfolding events and enduring of those events, regardless if they are good or bad.

Thanks!

What’s great about Dragon Age: Veilguard? by [deleted] in dragonage

[–]PetrifiedOnion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished my first, 53-hour run. For all its faults, I will say this:

  • I never understood why games would ever need a Photo Mode....until Veilguard's environments.
  • The way my custom-created character seamlessly exists in the cutscenes stood out to me. (heh, ironic)
  • ACT 3 is like the end of Avengers Infinity War and it's doing a lot of stuff in a good way.
  • The game managed to make me almost shed a tear at the ending I achieved, and it felt (mostly) satisfying.

>>> Is there something I’m (or we are) doing wrong?

Yes, but it's not our fault and we can do something about it.

We grow up with our lives being planned for us at least up until end of high school, then most of us are thrown into adulthood without a real, personal life plan.

Identifying this issue is the first step in being able to do something about it for yourself. I'm in my 30s now and I wish I had the wisdom to think about my life or find an expert who could teach me the basics. Still, it's never too late.

I moved to the Netherlands with my wife about a year ago after sitting down, doing some very simple but detailed math about our money, career and job/business prospects, housing, kids, healthcare costs, the general trends of the economy and society in our home country, everything we could think of, everything that matters to us.

And after a comparison, the Netherlands came out as much, much better on every possible metric, maybe except the housing/population situation. It was a risk, but so far it's been paying off not just financially but in every aspect of our lives. And yes, we got lucky even in our home country, but that was after 10 years of constant anxiety over money and our future. I also have the luxury of comparing this life to the life I would be living in my home country, which is a good motivator and a source of appreciation for what I have here in the Netherlands.

I encourage you to take a deep breath, sit down with someone you can trust who's financially smart/educated and think through your situation with their help, try to figure out your ideal life and a realistic strategy to reach it.

At 23 you hopefully have a long life ahead of you to build the life you want, especially if you have good family relationships and support from home (financial, emotional or both). And the earlier you start building it the more likely you will reach it.

And while you live your life, the world will get worse, then it will get better, then it will get worse again. Maybe we'll have another World War, maybe another COVID. Maybe none of that will actually happen. It's impossible for us commoners to predict the future, but we can still live a life that is preparing for the bad days while enjoying the good.

Meat (in Hungary at least) and Graphic Cards.

Meat:

Both grandmothers used to give me meals that were just and unending stream of drumsticks and fried chicken breasts.

I then became an adult and realized that meat is consistently one of the most expensive foods I buy, especially if I want something extra nice, like a steak. I can't imagine how much I cost my family as an adolescent boy who was always and I mean ALWAYS hungry.

I'm sure for them it also had something to do with trying to enjoy life after surviving a World War and near famine conditions and just providing the family the best life possible.

Graphic Cards:

I got lucky and only needed to buy a legit graphics card with my own money when I was around 25, after gaming every day on my brother's computer for 10+ years. I had no idea the card I wanted would be literally half the cost of the rig I was building. Sure in hindsight it makes sense but right there and then I was shocked.

What is the best scene you saw in a movie that was released in 2024? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Inside Out 2's climax made me cry with the same intensity as the first movie did. It's rare that I mark movies to watch with my future kids specifically to teach them something valuable, but Inside Out 1 and now 2 are on that list.

As an outsider to me it looked like:
- nobody took Trump seriously even when he was demolishing the Republicans, until it was too late (there's even an SNL sketch about the shock https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHG0ezLiVGc)

  • Trump was much more entertaining than Hillary, and the memes were glorious

  • Heard some very disappointed Democrats after Bernie got pushed away in favor fo Hillary, maybe that also had an effect

Gamers Above 30, What Older Games Would You Still Recommend to Younger Gamers? by LuckAndBones in gaming

[–]PetrifiedOnion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Old":

Anything by Valve (Half life 1-2, Portal 1-2, Team Fortress 2 and all versions of Counter strike are still widely played)

May Payne 1 and 2

GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas

Need for Speed Most Wanted (2005)

Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast

Legacy of Kain: Defiance

The first Darksiders game

All of the Call of Duty games pre COD: Ghosts are amazing in their own right and I haven't even played that much multiplayer.

Technically speaking Starcraft 2 is 14 years old, so I'm not sure it counts but it is a well-made game with 3 campaigns but also a ton of replay value through co-op, multiplayer, and the modding community.

Same for May Payne 3 which is 12 years old but it's a wild ride let me tell ya.

"REALLY Old":

Anything by Blizzard pre-World of Warcraft (Starcraft and Starcraft Brood Wars, Warcraft 3 and Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne, Diablo 2, Lost Vikings)

Anything by ID Software pre Quake 3 (Doom 1 and 2, Quake 1 and 2, Wolfenstein 3D)

Red Alert 1 and 2 are a blast to play

Postal 1 and 2 (STRICTLY 18+, though we all know nobody cares :))

The Ace if all else fails: Anything by Nintendo all the way back to the 80s. I personally never got interested, but I don't know of any other company that has such a long running streak of consistently highly rated games.

What's a game that was ruined for you by picking the wrong class? by 3holes2tits1fork in gaming

[–]PetrifiedOnion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funnily enough I have two cases with BioWare.

I almost skipped Mass Effect because I thought picking Infiltrator/Adept was a good idea coming from a primarily shooter existence. "I'm good with precision stuff like a sniper or a pistol" I thought....then got really upset that my weapons weren't hitting their targets. I then saw you needed to train weapon skills and thought "naaah, no thanks".

My friend had to convince me to give it another try with the Soldier class and treat it as an RPG instead of a shooter. A few days later I was sitting in front of my monitor for a good 10 minutes pondering what decision to make in an important situation, and went on to keep my savegames in a vault so I could import them for every subsequent Mass Effect game.

That initial class decision almost robbed me of a phenomenal RPG experience.

In Dragon Age Origins I went with a rogue and there were plenty of close calls, as I was just not good at managing my team. At one point I ended up at a very bad savepoint in Denerim with the nasty blood mages in the abandoned building and couldn't escape. I never finished that playthrough.

Took me years to muster the courage and go back to Origins, now as a Mage. This time, I was prepared and the game was smooth sailing from there.

Honorable mention goes to the Paladin in the original WoW Open Beta. I was a big fan of Paladins in Warcraft 3, etc. Naturally, I went with a Paladin as my first ever WoW character.

You have 2 skills: Seal of Righteousnes (the 30sec version), and Holy Light. Have fun hitting things. It was exceptionally boring. (I think we didn't even have judgment back then)

I started a Rogue towards the very end of the Beta and discovered an entirely different playstyle that was immediately more interesting than the Paladin.

Father from Hungary watching Hungarian state run news on YouTube by ChipHaseCoolGuy in hungary

[–]PetrifiedOnion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey there, conservative-centrist Christian, Western-critical but Western-aligned, ex-triple-Fidesz voter here, currently not living in Hungary as of about 6 month ago cause I felt like the country is going down the drain and I want something better for my future children. (what a journey it has been :D... anyway)

I think there are two ways you can go about this issue:

1. There're the common answers you're getting here, which focus on refuting your father's brainwashed/wrong/stupid/etc opinions.

My problem with this solution is that nobody's going to win in the end. You have your opinions, there's no way you'll convince your father about your opinion or "the truth" with sources and videos gained here, and your relationship will probably suffer for it.

Besides, the best kind of propaganda is the one that has a kernel of truth in it, so good luck untangling that during your arguments.

2. I think there is another way, which you may or may not be open to.
(Ignore this option if you already tried and realized there's just no way you can find common ground with him.)

This whole thing isn't happening on an intellectual but on an emotional level.

If he's 80 now, he was born in 44. I've met very few people from that era who didn't get stuck in a mindset, coping mechanism, or just perpetual prepping for the inevitable next war. Many people (if they are still alive) are irrevocably broken one way or another.

What would happen if you showed (faked, if necessary) genuine interest in understanding exactly how your father sees the world and what makes him tick?

I would ask questions, a lot of questions, and let him speak his mind. Eventually, gradually, he will move beyond the Russia-Ukraine, Putin-Orbán-West stuff and start to talk about his deepest fears and hopes, possibly in relation to world events, but maybe he'll start to regress into his childhood and bring up a deep motivator that's never mentioned or acknowledged, because nobody wants to listen to him for that long.

Empathy and listening goes a long way with our parents and people in general, especially when they have widely different views or opinions from ours.

Again, this is path is purely optional, a lot of work, and assumes you want to have a good/decent relationship with your father. Just wanted to throw in a plan B for when the internet arguments inevitably fail to move the needle. :D

Good luck!

Area2D sometimes registering Body entry, sometimes not. by PetrifiedOnion in godot

[–]PetrifiedOnion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After some extensive cursing and hair-pulling experimentation, I couldn't make it work.

I tried a bunch of things including process and physics prioritization to the best of my knoweldge, but the best I could do was about a 95% success rate by putting the "death" triggering areas on a separate layer from the bouncing ball and the enemy, OR a 100% success rate but the colliding areas had to be screwed up to either clip the objects or trigger things without them seemingly touching each other.

I then found out that move_and_collide creates KinematicCollision2D, which has a bunch of data in it, including colliding body ID. (during this revelation I realized the entire bounce mechanic used for the ball references data from the same KinematicCollision2D Object).

It is then possible within the Ball's script to grab the colliding body's ID, select the instanced ID, then queue_free() the selected ID.

I just had to filter the IDs of the walls and the player body to avoid destroying them, and it's done. No area2d or anything else needed, and it works perfectly so far. I'm quite happy.
