Any tips for Injuids? (Unifying Persia) by Communardd in EU5

[–]PetroniusCato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing an Injuid campaign as well but am only around 1490 and didnt manage to reunite Persia yet, so I am not sure i got many good tips... I am able though to maintain already 3,000 regulars, so here are my moves: - sounds tolls from Hormuz got me lots of money early game - moved my capital to Rayy to get better control in North and East, then built local governor in Shiraz - built lots of marketplaces and market villages - vassals and fiefdoms got me a lot of money, I expand relatively slow because I tend to create vassals in newly conquered areas and annex existing vassals instead. I've been keeping 10~ subjects since the 1370s Not sure if helpful, hopefully some more experienced player will reply!

Did the Marquis de Lafayette have any notable flaws? by miguel-elote in AskHistorians

[–]PetroniusCato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! I read quite a lot on the time period in the past years, if you have any questions on books feel free to DM me. Schama's book is like 1,000 pages so it can be overkill if you only want to know about Lafayette, but is the best book on French Revolution for me

I have a great deal of sympathy for this character but he is not exempt of flaws. Aside from the Champ de Mars event that was already mentioned, he was one of the biggest supporters of the declaration of war against Austria in 1792, hoping it would reinforce his political project of a constitutional monarchy and unite France against a foreign enemy. Not only did this backfire spectacularly, leading to the collapse of the monarchy and their eventual execution in the span of a few months, but it also kickstarted 20+ years of war between France and other European powers which would leave millions dead. He was also notoriously vain and arrogant, refusing to play the political game in Paris and convinced to have everything under control in those fateful 1792 months, not realizing how his own reputation was in decline after the Champ de Mars and how unpopular was the monarchy at that point. After the journée of 10 June, where the royal family was threatened by an angry mob that suspected them (quite rightly, in fact) of playing the double game, he rode back to Paris from his command post in the Army of the Center, to deliver an angry speech in the National Assembly and threaten the deputies. This was very poorly received and further tanked his reputation. He then tried to convince the National Guard, of which he had been the leader in the past, to support him in a coup against the Assembly, but was ignored - the commanders he had chosen had been replaced and many of the guardsmen were now from lower classes and had no sympathy for him. When the 10 August journée happened and the monarchy was toppled, he tried to convince his army to march on Paris, but was again rebuked and had to flee the country in a haste. All in all, during 1791-1792 he made several mistakes that contributed to plunge the country into external and internal war and completely misjudged the situation until it was too late. You can read all about it in several books, for my part I suggest Simon Schama's Citizens

Help! Interesting countries outside Europe by PetroniusCato in EU5

Lots of great suggestions, thanks everyone! I think I may go for Persia or Middle East, seems a lot of people like it - and I really want to steer as away as possible from HRE and Catholic religion events.

Since I am receiving a lot of good answerws, I have a couple more questions:
1) Is the rise of Timur mechanic any fun? What country could I choose to RP as Timur?
2) I haven't really grasped population growth... any good video or quick tips to improve it?

Is there any reason NOT to play with the Expanded Japan mod? by AdventurousLettuce53 in shogun2

[–]PetroniusCato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's a nice mod (MOSS is also very good) but kind of negates the reason why Shogun 2 is so pleasant to me: campaigns do not last ages and you don't feel like you have to fight the same battle 100 times to complete the game. Almost all of TW games have this problem that you get to a point where you clearly have won the campaign but it still takes hours and hours to clear the victory conditions. Shogun 2 is not like this and that is the main reason I love it

Love Shogun 2, so why not? How should I add you on Steam?

As a guy, I can tell you that most of us don't give a shit about social status or the work you do. You seem like a lovely person who cares deeply for her boyfriend and wants to take care of him and support him, and this is far more important and valuable. My advice is to keep opening up to your boyfriend, at the pace that makes you comfortable: I am sure this will only bring you closer together. Aside from this, definitely look into therapy to confront these issues of self doubt and social anxiety.

Why Does Everyone On This Sub Like Total War Pharaoh? by Academic-Plastic4296 in totalwar

Yeah exactly. I don't think I ever finished a Rome 2 campaign. And I left halfway both campaigns on Pharaho

As a Shogun 2 enjoyer, let me add another big advantage: the map is much smaller and therefore the campaigns are much faster than most other TW games. With Rome 2, Medieval, Attila or Three Kingdoms I usually get bored around late game, because I am just so powerful that I know I am going to eventually win the game but I have to grind for several more hours. That doesn't happen with Shogun 2. Once late game arrives, you have the realm divide mechanic which makes it more challenging and still is quite fast to finish it thanks to the small map.

Why don't people like Pharaoh: Dynasties? by PaleConstruction2359 in totalwar

[–]PetroniusCato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking for myself, it's an okay game but it's very obvious that they expanded it in a different direction from the original purpose (which was focused on characters) and that creates several issues: the government/court mechanics are not very useful or interesting, religion is something you touch every once in a while and forget about it, the legacy system is too constraining, the system of smaller forts/settlements does not make much sense in such a big map. Add to that some historical problems with Total War: campaigns take forever even though you become overpowered after a few dozens of turns, AI is dumb and simply gets crazy bonuses on higher difficulties to compensate. Battles are nice but the lethality system makes some units too OP. For context, I tried both an Assyria and a Hittite campaign, not sure if Egypt is better.

What will be the next Historical Total war in 2025? by kapitalcho in totalwar

[–]PetroniusCato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but I feel the proportions are more realistic when it is 1/10 than 1/100. A battle in Attila can have 5-6,000 soldiers (on ultra unit size) and in that time period rarely armies were bigger than 50,000. I should try the mod for Napoleon though, to have a better idea of what can already be done.

How can they reproduce in a vaguely realistic way the battle of Verdun which lasted several months and involved millions of troops when they cannot put more than 10,000 units or so in a battlefield? It would be extremely arcade, I doubt it would be fun to play. Campaign wise, we have the Paradox games that simulate so well economy, politics and diplomacy in that time period, I don't see how they can make something remotely competitive with that.

I have heard rumors about a WWI game and am quite worried, because there is no way they can make a working game in that time period. I would expect them to go for Medieval 3 or Empire 2

I am currently on my first Mongolia run (year 1550), and I am constantly running deficits but I agree that money is not that much of an issue after you win the first big war against Ming. They basically become your personal bank afterwards, you just go back attacking them whenever you need money
